Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I use a multitude of products for different things, I like the FreshStart powder in the bottle, Tide HE and the Wisk HE Super Concentrate (in a Small and Mighty size/shape bottle) seems to be pretty good but the scent is rather putrid if too much is used but it does clean well.

Steve (gyrofoam) brought me a bucket of the Costco Kirkland detergent and raved about it's performance. I had used others of these "big bucket bargains" from Sam's before and been less than impressed, but the Kirkland is far and away better than any other. Lower sudsing, good cleaning and almost no residual scent.

I use very little softener, so mostly vintage Downy, Final Touch and my favorite new product - All Clean Fresh scent which I can no longer find in the stores...dammit!

Since joining, Persil seems to be mentioned more than any other. I've never seen it here. Where do you get it? You always mention the great smell. I've been searching for the perfect smell since 1970 onward when Dash and Calgon, used together, produced the best fragrance I've known--excluding food, of course.

Currently, the closest I can get to the ideal is powdered Tide HE.

For soft underwear and socks, I like Downey's orange colored Simple Pleasures. I'm out of it so I can't give the proper title.

Persil is a top shelf detergent, similar to Tide sold in the UK, Europe and most parts of the world. The brand name is owned in the UK by Lever Bros, and in Europe by Henkel. As to why is a long story, involves WWII, Nazi Germany and the Henkel family, but suffice to say neither Lever Bros nor Henkel are happy, and both sides have tried over the years to buy the other out.

Miele USA began importing Persil laundry line when it began selling Miele washing machines in the United States. Mainly because there were not many if any good low sudsing detergents for front loading washing machines at that time.

Persil costs very dear in the States for what one gets. In the UK/Europe Persil isn't exactly cheap (again like Tide), but costs no where near what Miele asks. You can find Persil at your local Miele dealer, or order it directly from Miele (cheapest usually).

The Persil poweder from Henkel, uses rosemary essential oils as a scent. It is a "clean" scent, somewhat like old Tide, in that it is not cloying and strong.

Personally have used Persil in the past and while it is a great detergent, it has nothing on Tide with Bleach or Tide HE.

I like Tide Free, Fresh Start and All powders. As for fabric softeners I like Downy Free, All original scent and Brisa from Stanley home products (way too expensive though). As for liquid detergents I like SUN with Cuddle Soft for light cleaning and the new Tide Simple pleasures rose smells great for sheets and bedding.

UK Persil and UK Comfort.

Used for years and years without any problems.

Ariel is good, too, but we have always worried that it may upset our skin. Dad, in particular, thinks it is no good for his skin. He does not have eczema, but I do, so there may be something in it that does irritate him.

Reasons for choosing Persil (and I know the formula can change over the years):

1. Always rinses out – very little foam in the rinses.

2. No overpowering perfume. Unilever has apparently phased out harmful chemicals (artifical musks). Ariel still contains harmful musks, I think.

3. Cleans well.

4. Never seems to irritate me (eczema).

5. Hotpoint always used to ‘recommend’ it (hehe) when they were ‘good’.

6. Grandmother used it, and the fragrances still smell the same, so it often reminds me of her when she washed the laundry. :-( But I did pick her washing machines for her – Zanussi Jetsystem. :-))

In a house that resembles a graveyard of faulty modern Hotpoint appliances waiting to be collected, it is nice to have things that still work day in day out – Persil and Comfort.

Mickeyd---Persil (the Henkel version, at any rate) has a scent like no other detergent. Launderess confirms what my nose tells me--- it smells like chopped, fresh rosemary. Quite a contrast to the flowery/fruity/perfume-y detergent scents we're accustomed to.

I 'Googled' the word Persil and bought it from some online store. I think the box was $46 plus shipping.

Lemme see if I can find it and put in a link in the next post.... I'll be right back.

I've been very eclectic lately with my detergent tastes. At the moment i am using Dynamo liquid with Fluffy Sunshine Fresh softner, the combination of scents makes for one very sweet smelling wardrobe. Although i have to admit i only every buy whatever is on special at the shops, usually its Spree or maybe Cold Power but this week it was Dynamo so i scooped that up. Heres a pic of my current laundry room ( i have just moved house), with my detergent shelf. I have also reinstated the vintage Hitachi portable in full service since its been repaired (will post pic next)
Happy washing

Hey Terry---Peach Vernel Fabric softnener

I am---as you can see, a Miele Fan. They import it from Germany for sale.when I buy it, I usually get it either from Miele dirrectly for 8.00 for a 750 ml bottle9it is kind of small for American standards of huge), however, it is concentrated and takes a while to use it. I usually buy 4 or five at a time. There are several places in Seattle that i go from time to time that sell it like Albert Lee Appliance, Crossroads Appliance, or in Salt Lake City of all places, Smith Crown, (they are so nice to do business with)

German Persil and liquid Surf

I too am a fan of the German Persil (Henkel),as other people here have posted it cleans quite well and rinses out properly with very little foam and I have become quite fond of the liquid Surf range in recent months as the deli where I normally gert my Persil has sold out and have not had it for a long time now.
I find the Surf range leaves a nice fragrance through the wash which seems to last for a number of days after washing and it is a nice thin liquid not thick and gluggy.
I dislike fabric softener and so I do not but it, however my sister does have a little soft spot for it and so gets some every now and then but she only uses it on her own clothes IO wont have it on mine.
I think my favourite Surf is one called "Sunshine Fresh",although the "Tropical Fresh",is quite ok as well and of course you cannot discount the "Ocean Fresh" as well, oohhhh decisions!decisions!
I must confess that I really enjoy seeing the suds on top of the wash water when I wash, it reminds me of a giant snow cone.
Nurse! cup of tea time I think.
Cheers.
Steve.

our favourites....

...are ARIEL COLD WASH ACTIV COMPACT POWDER for the general wash (whites and colourfast items) and ARIEL COLOUR LIQUID for the rest of washing except woolens and silks which we wash with the outstanding PERWOLL (Henkel, Germany)!
Nearly everything we wash with cold water, as I've already mentioned here in the forum. The new ARIEL COLD WASH is really a step forward! It actually washes better and also rinses out better, too, even in cold water!
We usually do not use conditioners and, NO!, we have no harsh towels!
From time to time I add a bit of blueing (AZUR from Spain as there is no liquid blueing available in Germany anymore) to the wash-water when doing whites to keep them as utmost white as possible!
Pre-treating is seldom needed, but if, we have SIL (with petrol in against heavy grease stains) and self-made grime-away soap (containing soft-soap, bar-soap and ammonia) as well as OXY-CLEAN BOOSTER (bleaching agent) plus DAN CLORIX (chlorine bleach for the nearly hopeless stains!) at hand!

Mike...

Thats a nice looking Electron 1100 :)

Id LOVE a Computer control 1100- We scrapped one about a year ago, the main pcb was dead and obviously obsolete :(. Such an amazing looking machine tho- especially for over 20 years old!!!

Favorites: Tide powder-original scent(which doesn't really smell like the Tide from the '50's. Oxydol(where can I get that anymore)?

All time fav. fabric sofener would be: Rain Barell by Johnson and Johnson. ( that isn't made any longer either).

Favorites are Tide original powder and Downey ultra. I also think that Ajax was one of the best smelling detergents i had ever come across. Have no idea what the current Ajax powder is like.

I like bargain-brand Sun powder, for the vintage-y smell and (with the proper agitator) dramatic sudsing action. I used Fresh Start years ago and loved it, but it's become very hard to find in the Mid-Atlantic.
