What is your Favorite Detergent/Cleaner Scent?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

I wonder if it's an age or location thing? i.e. what you grew up with?

I am just amazed that a significant number of people picked quite old-style disinfectant smells like Dettol and Lysol.

To my nose, they're quite unpleasant and I'd actually go out of my way to avoid them.

I've noticed older people associating those smells with 'clean' where as I just find them very unpleasant.

I'd bet big money...

...that one whiff of anything that smells of chlorine sends members a-runnin. I rarely use bleach in the washer since the only white things I have are socks and jockey shorts (which due to my non-existent social life only the doctor ever sees on me) but I do appreciate the smell of chlorine. Salt water pools are the common thing here in the desert and I miss that comforting "all the germs are dead" smell. Being the only person left that still uses a dishpan, every morning I fill it with hot water, some of Madge's Palmolive liquid followed by a squirt of thick, splash-free chlorine bleach. Sadly the green from the Palmolive is instantly gone. My hands are in that water a lot during the course of the day especially when preparing food. I add hot water as needed. Madge would be not be happy.

In our household it was mostly Persil and Ariel and the least smelly version of Comfort whatever that was at the time. Comfort Pure in the later days, but I think there were older versions when I was a baby.

I definitely don't think we ever used blue Comfort.

Scents

Iej, I think nostalgia does have a big play.

I do normally like "heavy" scents. Only certain days I need to find an item of clothing that doesn't smell like it has been in a candy shop explosion :) depends on my mood.

I actually do like the medicinal/clinical smell of Dettol, Savlon, Germolene and the like. I just associate it with doctors/health etc.

I will always remember Bold blue and Chanel No5 as the scent of my Nan (who I miss terribly).

It's funny how much a scent can affect your mood.

zanussi_lover, I've just read your post with the pictures & I remember those products so well from my childhood.

I remember we all used to go to Makro & mum used Daz powder with Dyelock (later mealtime mess magnets) with Blue Lenor Regular. Those two scents together were gorgeous. I remember mum also buying a massive Daz plastic tub to store the powder in & I also recall a special offer with Fairy powder, you buy the 90 wash box & get 2 hand towels free with the fairy baby on them.

When you say about buying Lenor for 89p I miss when mum used to go shopping in Kwik Save or Somerfield & used to buy either the 1l or 2l Lenor regular with the girl on the front for about 79p for the 1l size. I also remember her giving the Febreze one a go when that was launched. It had a lovely smell then, guess it does now, Febreze Lenor is the only one that hasn't been spoiled, so far anyway.

Then you used to get P&G laundry liquid with the roller balls that looked like seashells :)

Daz used to clean brilliantly back then, plus it smelt lovely, suppose it does now too, just differently.

Im going back to using my strong scents, (ASDA moonflower and yalang softener)
Sometimes I find a break from strong scents and using a gentle, mind one is a nice change and gives your nose a break lol
Mum always used Bold and blue Lenor or ASDA softener when I was a kid, she very rarely changed what she used until recently.

While shopping today I decided to start smelling the detergents and found the NEW Tide original that everyone's talking about, and in the liquid form it was very pungent and florally, I wasnt a fan... And in smelling some Original powder I realized the box of Tide I have is the old original... The new stuff smells way different, but the box of old original that I have still smells different from what it used to (and frankly I didn't like it anyway), so to me the powder hasn't smelled good in a long time.
Also what Tide is claiming about the old Original now being in the Mountain Spring bottle (liquid detergent) is correct, I smelled it and it smells exactly as I remember the Original smelling. IDK if the same is supposed to apply to the powdered Mountain Spring or not, all I could find in that was the scent that Mountain Spring has always smelled like.

I've always loved the smell of Gain too. But honestly my favorite laundry detergent smell is A&H Fresh Scent (the one with Oxy). I would walk by my laundry room and just sniff the bag. Hahaha. I was sad to find that it wasn't rated great for cleaning though. I've been trying other detergents, like Cheer and just bought the Sears Ultra in the orange box. Both smell great too.

Fabric softner, Snuggle is my favorite…followed by regular Suavitel and Downy April Fresh.

I'm very smell orientated so everything I buy must smell good to me :)

I think right now, it's the smell of GAIN! (Gain Original)

Right now have the huge jug with the squeeze-pump at one end and the knob at the other end, that you turn to control the flow (and thought I could just POUR the stuff through it--but maybe saved myself from what a mess that could make! It's the BIGGEST SIZE, so probably too large to ably control; I hold it over the washer's opening & squeeze out the right amount!!!!)...
