"France has a *much* wider selection of detergents than the UK & Ireland."

You can count on nobody outside France being aware of that, now that Google is censoring, excuse me I mean manipulating search results. Including international sites.

Just check Google.fr

Every international flavour of Google localises results.

I don't use Google.com for Ireland for example, Google.ie gives far more relevant results.

Old P&G formulas - Ariel, Bold and Lenor

Ariel Alpine was great wasn't it? My friends mum washed one of my t-shirts in it (I was about 10), and I wouldn't take it off because I loved the smell.

I think Ariels formula and branding in general was its best when it was in that font (pics 1 & 2) during the late 90s to 2005/2006 when they changed the logo. Their product was better quality, I remember it cleaned a lot better, as I remember I could soak some tea towels which were heavily stained in a sink with a scoop of Ariel Essential, and they would be spotless after an hour of soaking in the sink, the stains would just dissolve instantly, even my white socks, the dirt would just dissolve without scrubbing, and they would be spotless and very white.

Bold my mum used to use, see photo (3). I remember that formulation which was Spring Fresh, and later changed to Bold Aqua, this too had a light fresh scent, which wasn't cloying. I stopped using it when they changed the Blue box to Ocean Clear around 2004ish, when the smell became extremely heavy and sickly.

Lenor was at its best in Dilute, I miss being able to purchase a small 9 wash bottle of Lenor at the corner shop for 89p (pic 4) my favourite fragrances then were Oriental Blossom (Pink Cap) Lenor Spring (Blue Cap) and Summer Breeze (Yellow cap), these had gentle and really refreshing scents with no disgusting chemical after smell like the Lenor we have now. I also remember Carnival Passion which was also a nice fragrance.

Yep agree,

Agree with all the above there, I remember all those products and they were brilliant. I remember the smell from the Ariel and it felt like a premium product that would clean properly and leave a great smell.

My Nan used to use the Blue Bold and will always remember the scent.

I used to use the Green Bold which was I think called Alpine Fresh, and that was amazing too (this would have been around 2000/2001)

I have actually contacted P&G to ask is there any scope to bring back Ariel Alpine? They still make it, as they sell it in France, so surely they could push some over here :)

On a side note, if you still use any Ariel products. I am currently using Ariel Excel Gel (Colour version) and along with that those new Lenor Unstoppable beads (Blue ones "Fresh scent" the smell those leave behind reminds me of something along the lines of an Alpine scent. I don't know if you'd think the same.

Here's hoping P&G will consider bring Alpine back, as they seem to be releasing 40 new Lenor's a week :P

My Favourites

Here are some of my favourites,
1. Dettol antiseptic, everything just seems to smell so clean with it.
2. The old Rinso powder.
3. Air-O- Zone air freshener, rose, pine, etc,(no longer around unfortunately.)
4. the old Minit range of air fresheners and don't laugh but also Minit flyspray.
(Minit was one of the original Woolworths brands from many many years ago, scary that I remember it.!)
5.Shelltox fly spray(come on my fellow Aussies, please say that one of you other than me remember that product.)
6.Flash powder general cleaner.
7.Medic medicated room spray, used for relief from coughs and colds.
8.And Earth Choice laundry liquid, nice light fruity type fragrance and actually performs pretty well too.
9. the original Spray Fresh anti-perspirant.
10. Blue Clinic shampoo.
Just a few that I dislike.
1.Fab powders and liquids and Surf powders and liquids.
2. All fabric softeners.
Good thread thanx for it.
Steve.

I was also a fan of Ariel Alpine. Has anybody else noticed that since Ariel changed their logo last year, the Ariel with Febreze powder is now going by the name of Ariel Alpine. If you look on Morrisons website and search for washing powder you'll see it. I haven't tried it yet so I don't know if it is actually the one or not. It might be worth trying though just in case it is.

As for Lenor, I'm not really keen on any of them these days. I'll use Summer Breeze and Spring Awakening but I don't like any of the Infusions. I think the best scent Lenor ever did was Alpine Spirit, I just wish they'd bring it back.

Ariel Febreze "Alpine"

I noticed that too supaspeed. It even shows this on Ariel's website. I will have a look next time I'm in store to see if it shows Alpine on the box.

I hope they do bring an Alpine out again. I contacted P&G and received a generic response, but hopefully, it's put the idea in their heads lol.

A few more I remember

Was thinking about this thread at work today and remembered these couple.
1.Castle laundry powder, nice fresh lemon fragrance.
2.The original Pine-O-Cleen range, in particular the Spice fragrance.
3.Solyptol antiseptic, similar to Dettol but a little milder.
4.Ajax powder cleanser in both original and lemon fragrance.
Cheers.
Steve.

Favorite Smells

'50's- Oxydol, American Family Soap and Detergent, Surf, Breeze, Rinso Blue, Cheer, Tide,Duz. Fabric softener- Sta-Puff, Downy, Nu-soft. Cleaners - Liquid Handy Andy, Pine-sol, Lestoyl,

'60's- Vim, Salvo, Dash
'70's- Gain, Rain Barrel Fabric Softener.

Original Joy dish detergent. When I was in Florida last year,I was on a mission to find it.
I haunted Kroger,Winn Dixie and Publix. I am sure security thought I was a crack head sniffing all the bottles. None came close.
Joy dish detergent, frying bacon, brewing coffee and Players cigarettes were the smell of my favorite aunt and uncle's house.
If Tide Cold Water came in a cologne I would buy it.

I decided a week or so ago to buy a box of Tide Original HE powder from Sam's, since regular Gain powder has been performing less than adequately within the past 6 months or so of using it. It's heartbreaking to no longer be able to use the detergent and scent that I love above all else, but I need detergent that can actually take dirt out, and P&G seems to have other ideas. After learning that HE detergents can still be used in traditional machines and that their main difference is the increase of anti-sudsing additives, I figured Tide would surely be the TOL on the shelf. (I've been buying detergent at Sam's lately because of the price vs. quantity, and they have stopped carrying non-HE Tide and Gain.)

I was sadly mistaken. I don't think it's working any better than the Gain did, but what really bugs me is that the scent is no where near the smell I remember as Tide Original. Instead of the crisp clean smell from even a year or so back, I'm now presented with this overly perfumy odor, with almost fruity tinges. I would have been just as well off buying the Gain because at least I would have a scent that is still close to the original with the same mediocre power of the Tide.

I was almost offended at the smell honestly. Even the liquid non-HE Tide Original smells the same. Sadly, the box I have is 160 loads, so it's going to take a while to use it.

It just goes back to the question I ask the universe every day: Why do people insist on changing things that are fine just as they are, but fail to work on and improve the things that actually need it?

" Why do people insist on changing things that are fine just as they are, "

Blame it on marketing departments, and I agree completely about scented Tide. We threw out a $15 box of it because we couldn't handle the smell in our laundry room. Tide Free (unscented version) is pretty good imo though.

I love Gain original currently, and Gain Island Fresh smells good on whites that have been bleached with Clorox(it's just a clean smell...use chlorine and you know it's clean) and the new Oxydol powder. Growing up in the '70's and 80's I liked to smell Cascade and April fresh Downy. I can't believe P&G sold off Oxydol, Comet, Spic&Span, Prell, and Zest to name a few.

GUYS

If you have purchased Tide, and dislike the scent, CALL & COMPLAIN. Seriously. If enough of us, keep making nasty comments about the product, maybe they'll consider changing it back.

Also, it would appear that Tide Reps, get some sort of credit, for how many coupons they send out, because, with every phone call I've made, they've been *too generous* with offerings of product replacement coupons.

So, say you're disappointed with the new scent, and would like them to consider changing the formula back. They'll probably mail you a coupon for a free tide product up to $20. ;) lol

I left a nice 1 star review on the Tide website, but before that I read through other reviews. The majority of them were complaints about the smell as well, so if it's the rest of society that hates the change right along with us here, maybe they'll eventually have no choice but to change it!

Many of the reviewers commented that when contacting customer support, they were simply instructed to use Tide Mountain Spring, as the new scent for that variant was "similar" to the Original, to which the customers' responses were that P&G can shove that theory and if they don't want to change the formula back, we just won't buy it.

I washed my last load of laundry in Tide Original powder and noticed the smell was very strong and kinda nauseating. I never thought Original Tide powder was nauseating all the years I've used it prior to this time, in fact I bought powder over the Original liquid because the liquid made me sick! I think I will take the above advice and complain to them. At the very least I might get some free coupons.

I have some Ace detergent with phosphates that I bought 5 years back while in Mexico that smells like Original Tide from many years back, It smells absolutely wonderful, a nice light fresh fragrance. I'd go crazy for it if they brought that back. (Closest thing to it now is original Gain powder).

Not Only Are Scented Laundry Product Offerings

From P&G, Unilever, Henkel, etc.... highly fragranced they contain chemicals to attach fragrance firmly. This is the "long lasting" effect many tout, but there are health concerns about those chemicals not to mention inhaling all those fumes.

Notice after doing the wash how one, two, three, or more days afterward the boot, tub and your washing machine in general still smell like whatever fragranced detergent or fabric softener used. Well if the stuff sticks that firmly to plastic, rubber, PVC and so forth imagine what is in your drawers/cupboards.

And to further Launderess' statement, think about how many people throw in too much detergent, not paying a bit of attention to the lines on the scoop or cap, not to mention how many people use such things as scent booster pellets and the like nowadays, and then proceed to allow the machine to only do a measly spray rinse rather than a deep rinse. Then they throw dryer sheets on top of that. I love fresh smelling clothes, but I'll pass on masking odor with scented chemicals rather than truly cleaning them.

On a related yet different note, I've been purely against using "scent boosting" pellets and powder toss-ins with my laundry, however, my aunt Robin has the perfect use for them: sprinkle a handful on the floor while vacuuming and suddenly the room is filled with a perfectly light fragrance! When you empty the vacuum, just toss another handful down and vacuum them up to replenish the smell. I only recommend buying them if they're on sale and you have coupons to combine, as $8.00 is far too much to spend on something that simply smells nice. I paid $3.00 with sale+coupon and got the Gain Fireworks Moonlight Breeze scent, and it's brilliant! I only wish I had a Rainbow vacuum like she does so the pellets can actually dissolve in the water.
