Yesterday, I bought another Nutone V-50 range hood, this one is a 30" which is the size I need (I also have a 48" of the same model which I haven't found a use for yet!).

I completely forgot about two details when I got it, the current vent hood in my kitchen has it's exhaust port at the back, this one exhausts at the top and it's not reversible. So I'll need to make some modifications in the ducting. But here's the other thing I forgot about, the unusual size and shape of the duct connector which also features a cooling space for the blower motors.

Anyone knows exactly what I need to connect it? The last pictures show the exhaust and it's measurements.

I needed a similar box for my Vent-A-Hood when I installed it in my kitchen a few months back.  I was able to find something at the local Home Depot that I could make work but your dimensions are larger front to back than mine were.  You may have to have something fabricated if you can't get it from Nutone, a quick search turned up lots of Nutone parts for ducting.  The other option is that you can call a local HVAC company and have one of their sheet metal workers fabricate it for you as well.

This is an 8x8x6" round transition for example.

That's a beautiful hood, Phil, I love the channeled SS.

Thanks Greg.

I'm wondering about the vent grille next to the outlet, should it be vented separately?

I have never seen one of those installed!

The red sticker

indicates that the screened area is for INTAKE of fresh air for cooling purposes. The exhaust duct/transition should be sized to exclude the screened area according to how I understand those instructions. Otherwise the exhaust from under the hood would be drawn back into the fan and would include grease-laden air.

That's what I thought but I was wondering if the adapter just fits over the exhaust part or if it's divided? And since there's nothing that seems to draw the air in that grille, does that rely on the positive pressure from the blowers (I think that could cause problems with the greasy air).

Can't tell from the photos, but I would think the adapter would not cover the screened opening, only the dampered exhaust. Assuming that the hood is installed under some type of overhead cabinet, the (one) opening in the bottom of the cabinet should be as large as the exhaust AND the screened opening. Don't install the intake hard up against the underside of the cabinet, with no way to draw air into the blowers.

I just noticed something else! The current vent hood is less than 7" tall, this one is 12". I'd need not only to cut the cabinets and get the ducting through them but I'd also have to cut the doors. Otherwise, the hood will be too low!

I guess the project will be on idle for a while!
