A shame that Italian brands have such a bad reputation overseas!

Not only overseas Gabriele, not only overseas. Overhere in the Netherlands Italian machines don't have a very good reputation either.

We have Merloni/Indesit/Ariston that according to you is shit
then there is Candy/Hoover (better)
then again Rex/Zanussi/Zoppas (all Electrolux now)
Ignis (Whirlpool)
Sangiorgio/Ocean (Brandt)

This last, I belive is much higher end than the others, plus they have a washer-dryer combination that I really fancy.
My mom's kitchen is smeg and it's been on and running since 1979, only the fridge was changed in 1994 because it was damaged on a house move.
Anyway, I must say that 60% of households have Indesit or similar appliaces. My new house for example is all Indesit: DW, oven, hob, fridge... and I couldn't be more pleased. My mom's old washing machine was an Indesit too, it lasted 15 years before the temperature knob failed and was dumped.

One of the many comercial coin laundries I frequented had top loading comercial Speed Queen and Blackstone top loaders and 5 Zanussi comercial double load front loading washers.The Zanussies were rarely broken down as compared to the Other brands.they also had a pre wash and 4 rinses.

We have them here as well, although, in the US, they call them Wascomat.I was at the Top Notch laundrymat, in Gladstone,Or( I needed my laundrymat fix)and Pam, one of the owners happened to be there, we had a chat about her new machines they had purchased reciently. They came from Europe, and were made by Electolux, to the tune of $8000.00, yes that is right, per unit for the big ones. They are pleased with them.

Ariston brand is being sold here in Florida....washers, dryers and dishwashers, at the Southeast Steel showroom in downtown Orlando.
We tried using those Ariston stack units (with condensor dryer) in our condo development (22 units). After the first three folks moved in, the horror began. We have now switched to the LG combo; better capacity and much better machine. We are catching hell in trying to return them ... our problems have been mainly with the dryers, but the washers weren't much better. Todd

Oooops, I forgot the Zanussis.
But I really like them, I have been washin with them for 3 weeks in a Laundry when I was 8 years-old, they were commercial.
My grandma has a Zanker, but it´s bulit by Zanussi, very good machine.

I won't even mention design...there is a reason so many of my students at the FH do a semester in Mailand...
Sure, Ariston is poor quality. But let's not forget the 'quality' our Beamter deliver in Germany. It isn't fair to only look at our Miele and BMW (I sure as hell ain't counting any Daimler products of the last 10 years) and say our quality is universally best.
Put another way, many North American tourists to Europe say: We Germans have civilization...but the Italians have culture.

I didn´t mention that all brands from Germany are best, just take a look at AEG, very poor qualitiy!
I only was diappointed of the washer choice in an italian electric store.

You don't have to be sorry at all! Italian domestic appliances you can find in reatil shops are usually low end appliances. You should just try to get an high end Miele model. You'll never find one on display in a shop. You just have to order it! people here in Italy usually think it's better spend money to make holidays in fancy places and replace cheap washing machines and dishwashers with more cheaper machines every four years. You should see how many really new washing machines are discarded every day lying near trash cans. Here are still sold machines with spin speed of 400 rpm and electromechanical timer! A friend of mine told me his new Indesit took about 4 hours to do a cotton cycle! Now, new Ariston machines sold here have the double brand "Hotpoint Ariston". I just wonder why...! Rex were quite good machines when they were made by Zanussi many years ago. Nothing that could be compared to Aeg and Miele but they were good for the italian market. I still remember old Rex machines having the window of the porthole made of plastic! Very suitable material to deal with hot water! Most of them didn't have a separate temperature selector and you had to do the heavy cycle only at 95°C! Chosing a cycle with lower temperature usually shortened washing times with obvious worse results.When I was a child I had a Telefunken washing machine(a strange mix of Aeg and Zanussi parts). It was terrible.We had to watch it during the spinning as it moved around the room and the results were poor! The only chance we have with that machine is it lasted no many years (the tub rusted and started to leak...). Panthera, I would gladly swap all our culture for a little more civilization...
