not much. I was gonna say a cup of coffee, but that doesn't even qualify anymore, really.

But I will say that your pretzel looks pretty good from here! I recently made my own pretzels at home, but I dare say the ingredients were around a dollar. I'm sure it was more than that.

Running a load of laundry at the nearby Laundromat, for fun, doesn't qualify either.

Perhaps a scratch off ticket?

Yes Romons we call it , gets a box full of pretzels everyday from the Philly pretzel

factory.

And you better get them before the evening ..because the school kids will grab..eeeeeek.

They are three types same shape vary too

in prices in different parts of Philly. 

If your a TRUE PHILADELPHIAN you pick

the ones you like best ..I like them after 3 Or 4 o clock they get a little harder lol.

And I like them burnt on the sides .

Some staff cant stand it when I say 3rd row the two at the bottom please lol.

South Philly turns out pretzels early in the morning around 4:00 am and you can get sometimes 4 hot steaming pretzels for A DOLLER.

Pretzels

Didn't look much like pretzels, but they tasted just as good. Easier than you might think.

The Mat machines were SQ TL's of course. Although it has been a while since I have been by there.

Not me.   I refuse to give anyone cash who is asking for it on the street.   But then, most of the people I see here in the LA area asking for money are just pan-handling and most likely NOT homeless.   I would much rather buy food and give it to someone who says they're hungry than give them cash.  

 

One time I bought a couple burgers for one guy who claimed he was homeless and hungry.   I handed him the bag and though he took it, he obviously wasn't happy about it, proving he wasn't that hungry after all.  (There have been others I give food to who are truly grateful and start eating right away.)  

 

Another time a guy was in a gas station carrying a gas can claiming he was out of gas and money and needs to "get back home" 2-3 hours away.   I insisted on filling his gallon gas can for him even though he practically insisted I didn't.   Once it was full he walked off and didn't even say thank you.   I saw him again a couple days later in the same gas station pulling the same scam.

 

Most of them want the cash instead, but this is the exact reason I do this.   Call me a cynic if you like, but I've seen this often enough to know it's a scam the majority of the time.

A couple of years ago the Houston Police department arrested a couple who were panhandling on a major thoroughfare. They were sending their 5 year old kid out in traffic at stoplights to collect the money from drivers. That's why the police got involved.

A further investigation showed that they were living in a house with rent paid for by a local church and that they had an income of about $65,000 per year from their pan handling.

Every time I see someone carrying a sign "Will work for food" I want to stop and tell them that I have gutters than need cleaning, a lawn that needs mowing and two cars that need to be washed and waxed. Somehow I don't think any of those would be interested.

I've had that gasoline scam tried on me before.

Another one I see that gets me POed is the guys that come up to your car at stoplights and start washing your windows with filthy water.

Try it before assuming that. You might be surprised.

I'd also recommend a visit to your county's social services department, and talk to the welfare recipients you see there. The one commonality I've found among people who subscribe to the "crack mothers squirting out babies" right-wing delusion is that they've never stepped foot in one of these buildings.

Before it was made a misdemeanor in NYC some years ago, you could fend off squeegee persons just by turning on your wipers. Of course it smeared your windshield but better that than having it washed with a used bandage or worse.

I used to hate getting pestered by panhandlers on the subway. Always needing a "couple bucks" for food, etc. Yet they always seemed to have a pack of smokes in their shirt pocket (what is it, $8 a pop now?), and after all they had $2.00 for the fare (unless they jumped the turnstile=a crime). Get lost.

For $1.00 down here you can get a quickie drive-thru carwash.

But this has been a marvelous thread imo. Great ideas, and it's provided genuine insight into why AW users like Allen and Charlie rarely have a positive thing to say about anything and seem perpetually miserable.

Maybe I've been around the block a few times more than you have. In my life I have experienced more than you will ever even dream about.

You talk about "Community Services Departments". Why don't these street panhandlers use them? That's why those buildings are there. I'll tell you something. The reason a lot of those people don't use those "community service centers" is because they are alcoholics, drug addicts or mentally out of whack. In order to use those community services they'd have to straighten out their lives. And a lot of them don't or can't do it. Besides, a lot of those people who "Will work for food" I wouldn't even think about letting them know where I live.

Let me tell you another thing about these kind of people. You can help them out financially and it's never enough. They always want more. I know people who have gone out of their way to help the unfortunate and it almost ruined them financially. People will get the help they need when THEY determine they need it. In the meantime they'll just keep asking for handouts and look for people who are guilable enough to help them.

As for being miserable, I don't think so. I just see things as they really are and don't look at the world through rose colored glasses. I'm a realist at heart.

Haven't you ever heard the expression "You should have seen that coming."? If more people did that they wouldn't be in the situations they are in.

theres a difference among charities, fund raising, and beggars.....

the school soccer team standing outside of Walmart, shaking a can, asking for money is begging......this is just pan handling.....and I won't participate towards it...now if they would mow my lawn, or walk the dog, then it would be worth it...

organizations like the SalvationArmy is all about charities...and for the most part, for people in need......

local organizations holding a car wash, thats fund raising.....they are working to support their group activities.....

I allowed the BoyScouts to use my front lawn for a yard sale to raise funds so they could go to camp.....its been threees years of doing this, with minimal cost from the parents....the best part, the kids got to participate in achieving their goal...

just my 2 cents....
