One of the most comfortable beds I ever owned was a used double bed innerspring mattress, that I bought from the Salvation Army Thrift Store for $20.00 along with a double bed size old fashioned bed spring for another $2.00. The mattress had been sterilized, and was clean and not lumpy.
The reason I went this route at the time was because I had a Double size Waterbed (this was 1976), and when I moved to a new upstairs apartment, the manager told me that Waterbeds were verboten. There was a recession on, I was 25 and wanted to have money to party, and was not making very much, so this $22.00 used bed fit the bill. It fit perfectly into the unfinished pine waterbed frame. And was it ever comfortable.
These were my single days, and lets just say I had lots of overnight company then and without exception they all remarked on how comfortable that old bed was. I think it was the combination of the bed springs setting on the plywood base for firmness and that old mattress was soft, but the springs and base gave it great support and underlying firmness.
I’ll bet today it would be hard as hell to even find a set of those old time bed springs. I saw on Flea Market Flip recently where one of the couples bought a crib size bed spring, and paid $50.00! Times have changed.
