100 pounds in sterling is about what, 150 dollars US? Classic mentality and love of a good machine would dictate that this is an investment in a classic.
Also, it is very "green" to repair older things and keep them in use. The creation of demand for a new appliance has major ozone and energy demands at a cost to the enviroment and the consumer. Too bad they don't list on the price an enviromental cost to buy a new product=Ie 250 pounds and 60K of carbon waste.
To fix what we have should be reasonably affordable. In the States, we get credit(income tax) for buying energy efficent appliances. We should get credit for repairing something old and not sending to junk and creating the demand for new product. It is really expensive to get parts and have old things repaired here, as well. You end up chucking the old thing because you can get a new machine for about double what the reapir and parts will cost to fix the old one, out of warranty.
We need to get income tax credit for saving something old, so at least the repairs are a writeoff on taxes.
America is not there yet, but things are changing. The price of fuel here is making people see green instead of red.
