What's a fair price for a mangle iron?

I was driving down the road and spotted an electric mangle iron from the early 50's in a yard sale. Hotpoint. Links show similar/identical machine.

Condition of my unit is so-so. Seller doesn't really know if it works (it looks like 2nd hand estate sale stuff). Cabinet paint over steel with a slight "bloom" of surface rust coming through, so it's going to have to be stripped and painted.

Seller was asking $100.

I would find out what kind of working condition it's in before even getting interested. The problem I can foresee is that Hotpoint mangles are not all that common, so if any parts are needed, you might have quite a search for them. That's not saying you couldn't find any, but parts for Ironrites, for instance, would be a bit easier to come by.

One big plus is that the unit is nearby, because mangles cost quite a lot to ship, and it's very easy to damage them in transit.

If the unit is working, and just needs cosmetic attention and some work on electrical safety issues (like dried-out, cracked cords, common on older appliances), then I'd say you might be okay at $100. But if it's not working, I'd pass it up. A good mangle will turn up if you keep looking.

BTW, I used to live on East Fourth, very close to Fountain Square. Long time ago.

If it does not work, unit is worth nothing more than what one would pay for a door stop. Parts will be hard to find if at all, and vintage ironers are easy enough to come by.

As for price, ironers of all manner and sort pop up on eBay, CL, estate sales and elsewhere all the time. Condition ranges from MIB to ridden rough and hung up to dry wet.

With ironers you have to consider what the cost of shipping would be if purchased out of your local area. I'd offer $50 and work the seller up from there. I have more for shipping my vintage Ironrite portable ironer than it cost.

I would say,

$100 is too much. I bought my 1953 Kenmore mangle for $25. It is in beautiful shape and works perfectly. But Hotpoint's may be more valuable.

I really doubt that the seller will get his asking price. You may give him your phone number to call you later if he decides to lower his price. I'd say $40.00 is fair -- if it works!

I'd give $25 the most, and that is if the thing is promised not to be DOA. Otherwise let it go, vintage ironers are a dime a dozen.

Thanks for all your input... I decided to leave it behind. It's nothing I have a crying need for, and I def. don't need yet another busted down project to work on.
