Well, that's not exactly a direct quote from the person behind the counter at the local parts store that I visited. I needed the felt on which the front of the dryer drum rides. Checked online for price, description, etc., but I would prefer to buy locally. Obviously, I had no success at this store. I knew I was in trouble when I got that blank look when I mentioned "Speed Queen."

I did get the felt at another local store (and at a price cheaper than Internet price), and installed it this evening, so the 30-year-old SQ dryer is back to running quietly.

It made me think that, with all the people out of work in this country, who might also have appliance repair experience, how did that person get a job in an appliance parts store? I'd gladly take that job.

I cleaned out my local parts store of Frigidaire bellows and other parts I'd scavenged when they brought all location inventories online some years ago, even having them brought in from other locations around the midwest. When they arrived here, the kid was blown away when he noticed one of the boxes had the GM logo emblazoned on the front. Who knew??

Yep, know the feeling when I tell people at work/relatives that they should buy a Speed Queen...next is usually followed by "Speed What"? Sad.

I just got word that the appliance store that we visited as a child in my hometown is shutting down after 80 years or so. I would LOVE to open an appliance store, but it would surely fail...as most wouldn't appreciate what I would carry - the non-flashy stuff.

I run into this problem at auto parts stores too. Try asking the teenager behind the counter for a Willys or Edsel part, then throw them a curve with the word "Packard" or "DeSoto." Or ask for anything older then 15 years...

Had a repair guy, actually a kid, out once to repair my Calypso, he remarked of my collection, bad enough he didn't know of Rollermatics or Solid Tub machines, but didn't know about Whirlpool/Kenmore beltdrives......what are these schools teaching these guys.......its all about the new stuff....and how do you study and learn without first going thru the basics and history of washing machines and other appliances?.......

that's like going to school and only learning History/socail Studies, not from the beginning of time, but only the time frame for the years you are in school!!!

Makes you wonder why some of our youth are idiots, sorry guys, but some people lack common sense and street smarts....
