the color almond popular for kitchen appliances?

When I purchased my city house in 1990, it came with an almond fridge and stove.

Am I correct in guessing that almond was a 1980s color?

Strange, the things that I ponder.

Thanks loads,

Joe

"Almond" made its debut around 1980 give or take. My grandparents remodeled their kitchen some time in late 1979 or early 1980. They bought a Montgomery Ward Signature fridge and electric stove in almond after everything was finished. The fridge has since died, but the stove is still going strong after all these years.

Almond was introduced by GE at the end of 1976.....

when they got rid of their shaded appliance colors and went to the New Natural colors. The New Natural colors were called snow, harvest wheat, onyx, coffee, fresh avacado and almond......PAT COFFEY

I may be totally wrong, but I think I heard it here at AW---

that Almond (which I detest, even more than my second least favourite, Avocado,) was meant as an alternative to White that would hide dirt.

The landlord's stove and refrigerator are both Almond. They look weird with my White washer, dryer, and dishwasher.

Pat you are absolutely correct. I took a Home Ec elective in college (summer of 1976 I do believe) and it was called Household Equipment--(applianes--he he he-my sister took the course a yar or two earlier and knew since I loved appliances ...--I digress). anyway, I had to do some researrh on a papaer I was writing and because I'd been kinda shielded from appoiances while in college, I needed to do some "catching up". I was all edc ited because we stopped at Kmart and they had the new Almond color with some of their GE appliances.

thanks Pat agian. My computer crashed whille i was writing the original post about two hours prior to now. I was remembering I'd seen that color while doing the research but it seemed earlier (1976) than the datse of 1979 and 1980 mentioned here. My new houses in 1980 and 1985 had almond appliances in them. Personally, I'll take almond over pink any day.

Color Associations?...

Call me strange, but I tend to associate colors with different appliances, such as white for the laundry pair and dishwasher, gold, yellowish, almond or brownish hues for the stove, and either white or greenish for the fridge/freezer. Otherwise, I still have a harder time picturing blue, black, silver, or pink with appliances, regardless of style. But I can see where other folks do like their prefered household color styles to include appliances to match.--Laundry Shark

Not too strange, Shark!

White has traditionally been the colour of cleanliness, so there you get the washer, dryer, and dishwasher.

Brown is the colour of perfectly cooked meats, so a range that colour makes sense.

Green...vegetables in the refrigerator.

I stand corrected. After reading the above replies, I dug out my Fall/Winter 1978 Sears catalog. All the major Kenmore appliances could be purchased in almond, except chest and upright freezers. They were available in white only.

I'd imagine the same trend applied to Montgomery Ward Signature appliances as well.

And let's not forget the "second coming" of almond in the 90's, it was called Bisque.
The house we are in came with Bisque appliances. Except for the washer & dryer & refrigerator everything else is SS.

Just like avacado green---

I hate almond. My preferences are as follws:

1.Turquoise
2.Matadore Red
3.Poppy Red
4.Mayfair pink
5.Saphire Blue
6.Doe Skin
7.Charcoal Gray
8.Harvest Gold
9.Black
10.Snowcrest White

The current colors are nice but nothing will ever replace the pastels that were out from 1954 through 1969.Coppertone and avacado green were my least favorite colors and I absolutely hate almond. My grandpartents were severe cigarette smokers and all of our white appliances and any white plastic items and paint on our walls turned that godawful shade of beigh from the nicotine and tar that would build up and turn the wash water a dirty brown when I'd wash them down with Bluecote, a now defunct brand of surface cleaner from the 60's. Had I known about "Spray 9" at the time, I would have used it instead. That stuf is awesome but, I have yet to find it here on the islands.

Not a fan of

almond colored stuff. Just kinda boring looking.

I LOVE avocado, pinks, reds, blues, greens etc.

I don't match colors to appliance types, although I do think certain colors work better on a given appliance than others.

For example, I am not a fan of white, in general, but one exception comes with Maytag Center Dial washers. There is something about the (what I see as) simple, classy styling that is best served by white. At least, of the available colors.
