does anyone have a copy of the which? magazine reports for all of the detergents tested for 2008, the powders, tablets and liquids?

Would be great if somebody could post them up so I could see how they all did.

I'm interested to see how Daz did in the reports, particularly in powder and tablets

Hi there

Don't have the full report as don't subscribe any more, but from what I remember...

Tablets/ capsules test...

1 - Ariel bio Liquigel capsules
2 - Ariel bio tabs
3 - Daz tabs

Liquids

1 - Ariel bio liquid

Powder (bio)

1 - Ariel
2 - Persil

I'm sorry I can't remember more. The report seemed very biased towards PG IMO. And I just don't agree that Ariel liquigel capsules are a better choice for stains than the powder tabs.

how strange

the report sounds strange

as ariel liquitabs don't contain bleach, maybe they were good on greasy stains maybe, as i remember getting bolognase on my white t-shirt and i pretreated with ariel liquid before putting it in the wash, and it came out, but for general dirt you would expect powder or tablets to get the stains out

remember when detergents used to say they had stain digesters/ and fat digesters.

i think they are biased towards liquids because of all this small and mighty, ultra concentrated liquid malarky.

Well, they seemed to be claiming that the liquitabs were highest scoring because they were the best all rounders. Absolutely right, no bleach means that certain stains aren't washed away, but I think these did an ok job of partly removing bleachable stains (because it's a decent detergent) and so scored some points. It scored really well on removing make up stains, in particular.

The cynic in me says that if P/G had given Which? a `bung' to throw the test results, they would most want the liquitabs to come out on top. Surely they generate most income - with no control over dosage at all, isn't 20 washes about a fiver?

Having said that, to be fair, Which? claim Tesco value dishwasher tabs to be the best. They would have said Fairy if there was some sort of backhander going on.

I think that the Ariel powder tabs would have been a fair winner...they disolve great, clean fine and I have come to like the smell. They were only beat by about one point or whatever - it's just how the overall results panned out. They also tested for colour fading and of course this stuff would get more points than the powder for the lack of bleach.

Mind you, they didn't test Formil....!!!! Another fine detergent and with a classic `Ariel Future' scent, for half the price. And sudses less. Cleans just as well. Doesn't disolve quite so well but perfectly acceptable.

I haven't been able to put my Formil down for a week! This is unhead of loyalty for me!!!!

Store branded detergents

I agree, I quite liked the formil tablets, I'm going to get some Non Bio tabs to use on my towels,

I am currently using Sainsburys Non Biological Liquigel with aloe vera priced at £2.50. I'm using Non Biological detergent at the moment as my skin has been playing up, and i've been itching alot recently

It smells like dove soap with a hint of aloe vera, and I was using this with sainsburys Gentle Conditioner but today i got some Sainsburys Meadow Breeze Conditioner Its a bargain at 99p for a 750ml bottle. and 21 washes, and it smells lovely and because i'm a student i like to save the pennies.

I did my whites today, which were just a load of white t-shirts and a grey hoody, in the wash with some of the Sainsburys Non Bio Liquigel (50ml) on Cottons 30*c with a cap of meadow breeze conditioner.

I've fell in love with the scent, it smells like freshly cut grass with a hint of lime. AHHHH!!

who needs comfort or lenor when you can have store brands which do just a good a job at softening and freshening your clothes, while I'm a student and the credit crunch we are in, who needs to splash out on expensive brands of detergent and conditioner to get clean soft laundry

Thanks David, are they all for liquids, as they mainly listed as gel or liquids?
If you do have powders please is there any chance you can put it up, no rush.

Thanks anyways.

Notice the 'Colour Fading' rating.

The liquids that get the top five stars DON'T clean! (Ecover being one).

Hi dyson2drums,
Yes that was the liquid test results, I cant find the magazine with the powders results but I have captured the results from the web page.

wow

thats impressive that sainsburys basics biological laundry liquid got rated 3rd in the which report and its only 72p lol, i'm using sainsburys non bio liquid which is essentially asda non bio liquid (mcbride) and its very good.

I know what to use then when i'm on a really tight budget

..... Formil ->Adritt ->Formil ....

Here sometimes becomes Adritt, then again back to Formil
The Black one for darks is very nice. No dye loss even @ 60°C.

Here in Italy we've Formil reg liquid (and all other brands) with Marseille soap scent. Do you have such scent too ?

Lidl Detergents

I bought adritt conditioner in 2006 for my clothes, and maxitrat tablets which have now been turned to Formil Tablets and they are exactly the same. And adritt active fresh which is the blue one is now Doussy.

oooo i think marsaille soap scent is a continental thing, i remember being in the south of france on holiday and using French Persil Savon du Marsaille, it had a creamy soapy scent,

A question for the people in the know...

How come the liquitabs are the best for fatty stain removal?
I see basically tablets appear to be crap at removing fatty stains. I thought that advertisements for detergents always say how well fatty stains get removed! Maybe that was years ago im thinking of.

Forgot to say thank you David for posting the results. They are a very interesting read. Just when you think you are using a good detergent you read the results and it does not do well on which? tests.

Fat Stain Removal

Hi Mark,
You are most welcome.

I'm not exactly sure but the enzyme Lipase is effective in digesting fatty stains, the Liquitabs may contain more Lipase.
If you get grease or oil on your clothing it is easily removed as follows: Wet the stain and rub well with Fairy Household Soap, work the soap into the stain then launder as usual. It always works for me with cooking oils and fats although mechanical grease can require a second treatment.

Lipase

I don't think that lipase is used in the P&G formulations anymore. I think it was replaced by several glycosidases, which apparently can also be tweaked to act as an amylase for starchy stains, or altered to act on gum stains (guar, xanthan, etc.). I also gather that it can also be modified to act on pectin stains.

They probably just add more surfactant and polymers to compensate for oily stains.
