So Disproportionate!

Let's see...

There were two police reports, a helicopter called out, and two young people brought up on a variety of sex offences, with bail set at ten grand apiece.

Did it not occur to anyone to hand the guy the pair of shorts he'd asked for, let him get his clothes back, help the young lady sober up, and ask them both to leave the area?

Except for the bail bondsman's profit, it would have been the same difference to the community. These two people were certainly a little foolish, but why on earth do they have to end up with a rap sheet under these circumstances? Simple embarrassment would have been just as effective a deterrent.

I keep forgetting that America was started by Puritans.

Oh, And I Forgot:

They'll almost certainly lose their jobs with Pinnacle.

All this over being frisky someplace they shouldn't have been. Bad judgment, sure. But is it really worth all this?

I hope the people who called in the gendarmes are proud of themselves.

Remember

Sandy, our people have been here in the south (Jamestown) since 1607. Those puritans were a bit late, 1620 and I'm glad they landed on that rock they like so well and not here.

I can imagine an old lady answering the door to a drunk, naked man and what her reaction would be. Had that happened here he either would have been extended kindness and helped -or shot.

Greg:

You know what I mean- the Puritan influence is still strong in this country, even though it serves little purpose nowadays, and is actually counterproductive in some instances, like I feel it is in this one.

Is jobless-with-a-rap-sheet going to do anything to help these two people towards becoming more responsible members of society? Methinks not.

The couple should have gone on to their room and no one would have cared. But because they used poor judement in where they encountered they placed themselves in this situation.

Was there some overreacting? Yes. On the part of the police they should have helped them find their clothes, maybe escorted them to their motel and told them to only hanky-panky behind closed doors.

The woman who was greeted by the naked, drunk man did not overreact. She had no way of knowing what his intentions or previous actions were. She had the right to seek protection.

Well said Sandy

I wish our puritan neighbors well but I wish they would not have felt so pressed to push their will on the nation. Unfortunately they ran amuck in the name of all things "proper and right".

Quiet right iheartmaytag. With all the goingson in the country today who knows what that naked man at the door asking for help might have really done should she offered him a loin cloth.

Like I said, he might have encountered kindness and been offered help -or shot here in the South.

Meaning being, where I am from you always offer kindness and help to any in need. And, also, unfortunately you have to stay on guard and be ready for self defence. Both my mother and grandmother knew well how to use that pistol they kept close at hand.

We live in a different world today. I agree they were both stupid in their actions. Punishments do not quiet fit the crime today. They are either to harsh or not enough.

In this case it looks like bad judgement all around. In every way possible.

Now may I ask our members.....

If a naked drunk man showed up on your doorstep asking for something to wear what would you do?

Bye the way iheartmaytag, I understand your point. Now tell me what would you do in such a case?

Well at least you know he can't be HIDING a weapon.
and he probably DOES need to use the phone.

~If a naked drunk man showed up on your doorstep asking for something to wear what would you do?
Hand him my sexiest underwear and, once in place, say "Oh my you look better in it than I do."
Then, of course, my ethnic group requires I feed and "water" him. Hospitality, ya know.

My mom's house is up in the hills in Council Bluffs, next to a very large, very wooded park, with a scenic overlook where all the kids used to go to neck and drink beer.

In those pre-cellphone days, we'd get a lot of late night visitors wanting to use the phone: Usually car trouble, or girls who had walked out on their dates - stuff like that.

But at least once a summer there would be a case of somebody drunk and/or and naked - and almost always a guy - sneaking down the hill, and sheepishly asking for assistance. People always obliged, of course - it was something of a joke.

The cops were only called when there was real trouble: A fight, or something like that. We weren't the kind of neighborhood to bother the police with little things.

Last night here....

around 1:30, an exceedingly drunken, nearly nude woman was at the door.

She was wanting the apartment upstairs. I was far more gentle and polite than I wanted to be.

Nope, it wasn't I!
This is been one of the talks of the aviation community since this incident happened. Being nude and running around wasn't the problem, it was the fact that the pilot was supposed to fly the next morning at 07:30am. You need at least 8 hours "bottle to throttle". But most pilots I know don't have any alcoholic beverages for 24 hours before check in time.
Was that pilot actually going to fly the plane, or was he planning on calling in sick? That's the real question.
Plus it demonstrates lack of judgement on both of their parts.
And think of the embarrassment! If they don't get fired for lack of professionalism, the pilot will forever be known as "the naked guy in the woods". Crews talk. All the whispers behind his back. Other guys won't want to fly with him. And even if he does get fired and tries to hire on with another airline, how will he explain this arrest? I assure you that Chief Pilots of airlines are quite the conservative bunch. The explaination will be quite eyebrow raising to say the least!
Iheartmaytag you are exactly right. They should have just gone to their rooms earlier and nothing ever would have happened.

Maybe they were playing "If you can find me you can do me, and one didn't want to be found!"

Bottle to throttle

whirlcool, that was the part I was wondering about, whether he was supposed to fly in the morning. As you say, that aspect is the serious part. If he was as plastered as the reports say, there's no way he would have been sobered up by the time he was supposed to show up and get his briefing and pick up the clearance (6:00 AM? for a 7:30 flight). The airline has to take this seriously.

What would I have done.

Hard to say in this day and age. I know that's a cop out but you almost have to go with your gut in these situations.

Seven years ago we had a terrible incident happen just before Christmas here in ICT. A young, naked, bloody woman showed up at the doorstep of a family. Remember I said just before Christmas. It was almost 20 below that night. This girl had survived a home invasion, kidnapping and was the only survivor of a quadruple murder. She had been shot in the head, she refused treatment but wanted to tell what happened in fear she would pass out or die before the police arrived.

I have often asked myself what I would have done in that situation. I am sure I would have helped her, but would I have been in fear the killers would have followed her and come after me?

Another example that did happen recently. I was putting my daughter and groceries in the car when a woman approached me. She was very clean, nicley dressed and polite. She stated that she was from a town about 20 miles away, she forgot her billfold and needed $10 for gas.

1st I had no money with me, I had paid for the groceries with my debit card.
2nd, we have a large population of gypsies in our area that run scams all the time.
3rd, my inner voice told me that something wasn't right.

I told her I didn't have any money left, but directed her to the Priest at my church a few blocks away. I quickly got in the car and started to drive off. I saw the woman get into a nice late model expensive SUV, which was still idling and drove off with three other people. At first I had a twinge of guilt, but in talking to a woman at work, she told me that my inner voice was accurate, and many victims of crime ignore that feeling--I was reassured I reacted correctly.

As for the naked man, if my young daughter were awake it is imposible to keep her away from the door. I would more than likely hand a towel out the door to him, maybe the portable phone. I would probably have called the police as I would have no way of knowing if he had just committed a rape, or was trying to escape from the police and was trying to desguise himself. I would choose to err with an abundance of caution.

Once the police had the information on what was happening, and realized that truely no harm was done, they could have been more lenient

One of my employees boyfriend had this happen to him. He was driving home late at night after getting out of work and a guy ran up to his car naked and asked for some clothes. He didn't have any but took him to their apartment where he showered and they gave him some clothes and partied with him for awhile. He then asked to use the phone and called a friend who lived in the next city to come and pick him up. Well the police were there the next day to check the phone for the numbers that he called. They traced the numbers and went to that residence and arrested him for murder!! He had killed somebody and dumped his bloody clothes and ran off. So he seemed normal they said when he was at their house but you never know what is going on with someone in that position. Always listen to your inner voice to tell you right from wrong. Fortunately nothing happened to these nice people who helped him out, but they were in the presence of someone who had just killed another guy. Strange happenings. Speaking of strange happenings, anyone see on the news last week or the week before, that here in Nashua, NH a woman drove into a crowd of people and killed a guy cause he was a Red Sox fan and she was a Yankee fan. Now that's going a too far over a sports game. She is in jail and going to court on charges of DUI and second degree murder and vehicular homicide. Plenty of crazy people out there. All take care and be careful.
