Whirlpool Calypso - fix or part out

Hi All,

This is my first post as I joined here since it looked like there are people knowledgable about my Calypso.

I purchased it right after they came out in early 2002. I've had the bad design U joint replaced years ago and the machine has worked ok since.

Sadly, in the last six months, problems keep popping up. First was the phantom press on the keypanel. That was fixed with an eBay part, good a good deal and it included both control boards so now I have spares.

Second was this past weekend. I noticed that the clothes were more damp then usual when I went to transfer the load. So I set it to extend spin and walked away.

When I came back it looked just as I had left it, no spin had occurred. The inner tub seemed bound up so I turned it by hand a bit to get it free and tried the Extend Spin again.

This time it did spin and drain a bit of water but failed completely to stop and the end of the cycle. It also made lots of crunching noises.

So I did then drain recirculate test to get the rest of the water out and flipped it over.

The machine is a mess inside. Lots of rust in lots of places. Most of the upper spring clips are rusted away, the one on the bleach dispenser is gone completely. I found some loose bits in the bottom of the machine.

Turns out the white plastic spring clip under the pulley in the brake assembly has self destructed. It did not go quietly. It took out the bearing on the pulley and the upper bearing mount.

I currently have about $100 of parts in my eBay watch list. That includes a used brake assembly with pulley, some new gaskets and seals and the splash shield.

So should I fix it or part it? I don't have room to keep a spare washer and the wife really wants to get some laundry done. It will take at least a week before I can get any of the parts to me and then the time to install. Daughter just got home from camp and there are things to wash.

like it's time for a new machine. It will take longer to rebuild than you have the time for.

Parting out

So we have a new LG 3570 FL on the way, that means someone will be coming to take the Calypso away. Do any of you want parts for spares? What parts should I harvest?

I will take the replacement touch panel and send the phantom touch away, keeping the controller boards. Should I pull motors and the pump? What about the hardware inside the drum, U-Joint or wash plate?

The matching Calypso gas dryer is still working fine, though I think it is due for a humidity sensor cleaning.

Tips and tricks for the new FL? I've tried the Persil, both liquid and powder and the wife hates the smell. I didn't find it to bad but we were coming from standard Tide HE liquid.

LG washer

Congrats to your new washer! Though lots of people on here will bash it, it is a good washer for sure. Not the most durable maybe, but a verry good cleaner with quick cycles due to TurboWash and a heater that can improve cleaning quite a bit.

These are relatively easy to use. You can fill the drum all the way up, shouldn't be an issue, just don't stop sorting due to its big capacity.
With detergents, search around a bit what you like the most. Dose according to label, but be exact.
Keep the door open after use; maybe run a clean cycle once in a while with just some bleach if you don't use bleach on your laundry.
Use warm temperatures more if you didn't already. Cold should be reserved for loads that really need it.
Keep in mind that Normal (and most other cycles for that matter, I think) with TurboWash selected only performs one deep rinse with a spray rinse during each spin. Thus, if you use TW on heavy loads (towels, jeans), you might want to select an extra rinse. But that can be figured out with trial and error.

Rusting is the bane of Calypsos.  I found one used 9 years ago that was in good condition in that regard, although it needed a new u-joint, basket, and some scrubbing.  Collected a stash of spare parts along the way.  The touch panel went wonky last year, and replaced the pump for getting a bit noisy.

The boards, (working) touch panel, lid switch, water valve assembly and hoses, dispensers, water level pressure switch(es), motor, and pump (condition?) could be useful to someone.  Maybe the lid depending on condition.  Other mechanical parts require increasing levels of disassembly to access and would be suspect for condition.

I hadn't really considered any of the suspension components, even though I have the shocks hanging loose right now. The U-Joint might be a problem without a spanner wrench. Both motors and the pump seem to be in good working order and should pop right off the bottom of the machine. The water valve assembly I had totally forgot about, the hoses all have rusty springs clips that I expect will fall apart when touched.

The LG is discontinued to be replaced with a new model 3670 which is .2 CF bigger so the steel grey was on super discount ending today. I don't care much about the color, it lives in the laundry room where it doesn't matter if it matches "the decor". It actually was cheaper than the white model. I went with the extra 4 year extended warranty, it cost a little more the the rebates for being Energy Star and the dealer were offering so I felt ok with it.

Now I will have to teach my wife how to use it. She always complained about the Calypso leaving clothes dirty but she still hasn't figured out sorting by color and texture so I would never know what odd mix I would find. She wanted a machine like she had growing up, a top loader that fills with water. Not that she did the laundry then, her dad was the expert clothes washer in the family and I am guessing he knew how to sort clothes and use the washer correctly.

Yogitunes - When the new machine arrives, the guys will take away the old for scrap, mostly metal parts. If you would rather have it for parts I can do that but the case is in bad shape.

I will still spend some time today taking parts off the machine, in case the wife wants it gone right away.
