This must have been prior to dispensers and their magic clean filter. Don't see a lint filter at all.

I'm no expert...
I believe the first Lint Filter was the "Water Fall" which had a screen like device formed in a sleeve that removed lint. Then came the "Magic Mix Filter which was kinda like a round hair brush with a see through lid. Then came the Magic Clean which I know nothing about and how it worked. Attached is a pic of my newly added '61 Whirpool with the "Magic Mix".

The Clear Lid/Brush and pour your detergent (Powder) in there. When she starts up the water mixes the soap and dumps it into the wash chamber. Pretty Neat Huh ?

That is a cool brush style filter system that was used in the later WP's. I used to put the Purex tabs in Eddie's machine and watch them "go". <:
I used to use a old toothbrush to clean the brush filter, and it worked very well.

I went to shut off the water the other day and the cold would not stop running. It's a "toggle" type shutoff. It's old and corroded. I'm waiting for a plumber to change it next tuesday. And belive me ,,, I'll post pics of the Whirlee and the 1-18. I have a busy week end so, I'm waiting for next Tuesday. Can't wait to give the ShredMore a rest..

I've seen plenty of exterior pictures, and now more and more interiors. Thank you.
I had no idea that lint filter also served as a detergent dispenser. Now I know why it was called Magic Mix. My grandmother's Whirlpool also had the brush filter, but it was the plastic topped one. I believe the brush on hers covered the under side of it completely whereas the one pictured here had a clear center. Hers was a mid 60s model, and I loved removing the filter brush to watch the water flow through.

The brushes were always the same, but some did not have the glass viewing insert.
The reservoir's capacity wasn't quite enough to handle 1 to 1½ cups of powdered detergent as was the dosage back in the day. Our local Whirlpool dealer always advised NOT to use the Magic Mix as a detergent dispenser, to avoid potential clogging of the hose with detergent residue ... which I never thought that was likely to happen.
There was also a "bed of nails"-type of cartridge recirculation filter, which took the place of the brush-style in the early or mid-1970s.

I'm aware of four styles of self-cleaning filter used, amongst Whirlpool and Kenmore.
Pebble-canister.
Diaphragm-style mounted at the corner of the cabinet.
Diaphragm-style integrated with the pump protector mounted at the tub outlet.
Strainer-type snapped-in beneath the basket.
The first three were forced-recirculation and cleaned by back-flushing during drain.

Rick, your 56 set is so pretty! The chrome filter and agitator cap are perfect "customized" additions to that washer. My godmother had that set, and as she didn't have kids and was a fastidious housekeeper (She would wipe her boxer's mouth after it drank water from its dish) she kept them as clean and sparkling as your set is. I just love them!

Collecting More Whirlpool Washer Videos
I am still interested in collecting additional classic Whirlpool top loader videos of good audio quality. So if you happen to have a few moments to spare, I look forward to finding your demos on Youtube, Google, etc, as there are not very many older Whirlpool washer demos up there yet of decent quality. I have already grabbed those few of the exception. After all, Online.Movavi.com is such a handy conversion utility.--Laundry Shark
