Whirlpool Says It Is Cutting 4,500 Jobs
By Associated Press

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. - Whirlpool Corp. said Wednesday that it will eliminate 4,500 jobs as it consolidates operations as part of its acquisition of rival Maytag Corp.

The cuts affect three plants, the former Maytag corporate headquarters and a research center in Newton, Iowa, as well as administrative offices in Illinois, Canada and Mexico.

Herrin, Searcy, and Newton

were all mentioned as "slated for closure." Isn't that about everything, laundry wise?

Whirlpool also said it would consider selling Hoover.

who's really surprised?

I know that my dislike of Whirlpool is well known here, so I won't waste anyone's time with another diatribe.
Instead, I ask the question: Wouldn't if have been possible to use these employees and capital investments for a new approach? Just imagine the marketing benefits if Whirlpool had done a big media splash - "We took over an ailing American icon and restored them to youth and vigorous health!" Instead they drove another nail in the coffin of industry. Basically, the just bought off a competitor and killed them off. Who needs anti-trust laws anyway?

awful

and that is suppose to be good for our economy ???? to have all those poor people out of work ............ there is no loyalty to employees anymore ............

Wp seemed to know what they were doing very early on. As far back as the early fifties they claimed to be the largest manufacturers of washing machines in the u.s.

Funny how boring old WP with their neutral drains and anemic spins would one day take over the washer market. Really sucks , dont it.

This is really cutting to the quick-"Whirltag" closing sites in Mexico??Isn't everyone elese moving there as well as China?Maybe new Whirlpools and Whirltags will be built in China?Guess they must be looking for the least expensive or cheapest labor?
