Whirlpool Design 2000 agitator issue

I received the washer as a wedding gift from my Parent's way back in 1986! We moved it to Ft. Bragg, NC where we set up residence until I got out of the service. It has given me 27 years of service (as well as my wife) but now the agitator won't turn (on the washing machine, wife agitates me just fine!!!) All other cycles are fine and I hate to get rid of it if it can be fixed. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

but lets go over a few questions......

you say it doesn't agitate, but does the motor run?

does it spin?

any sounds at all?

or is it completely dead?

then we can start on giving you some suggestions, and go from there.....

IF it's a model with the auger agitator, the drive mechanism for the upper part might need replacing if that's not turning, but the lower part with the 4 paddles or fins is still oscillating during agitation periods.

KEEP THE WASHER. You will never buy anything new and top loading that will work as well.
