Ever since I bought my DD last year it’s always slipped into spin. But what’s strange is that on the super wash 18 minute cycle, it doesn’t slip into spin and it operates as it should the whole cycle. Essentially for now we use that cycle the most so it doesn’t do that, but I’m wondering why this is. For example, If it agitates in the wash for anything less than 18 minutes it will slip into spin the first drain, so like the perm press delicate and soak cycle. Ive heard different things such as some components need to warm up first, or something like that.

I ordered a new coupler and I’m hoping this is the issue, but if it’s the coupler, why doesn’t it slip into spin every single time instead of only when it’s not agitated for long enough? Any input is very appreciated as always to help me figure this out because this is a machine I’m keeping forever.
 
the coupler does not control the neutral into spin sequence...

your neutral drain parts are failing....there is no rhyme or reason as to when it will work properly, or malfunction....

just the action of it not functioning as it should, is a clear sign, those parts should be replaced if you want it to function the way it was designed to....

in any case, there are plenty of vids on YT of how to open up the transmission and change out the parts.....

not a bad time to clean out the trans and gears, add new fluid, and a new coupler would not be a bad idea at this point, I recommend the heavy duty one for extended life...

for a few extra dollars, toss in a new pump and dogs for the agitator....and your machine should be set for many more years of service....

what the heck, inspect your fill and drain hoses for wear....replace if needed....

Yogi is correct....

The neutral spin assembly added in the early/mid 80's to the DD was their Achilles heal. Every DD washer I've owned has needed the transmission opened and the neutral drain kit replaced at some point, some as soon as 3 years, some lasted 5. Generally the warmer the old thick fluid gets will allow the worn neutral drain assembly to function, so that's why it works on the 18 minute cycle, eventually this will even stop working and it will spin drain no matter what.

As was said there's lots of videos on the repair online and kits to do it. Absolutely worth fixing. Hold onto the coupler and replace it when the transmission is out. When the coupler breaks to get nothing but a whirring motor, no agitate, no spin.
