"food warmer'

My mom once had one on her Tappan range. One holiday the oven broke, so she baked a corn tomato casserole on it to take to the gathering. My aunt had the same range and her oven was also broke. "You mean I could have made the green bean casserole after all?"

Food warmers

Held already cooked food at a 'serving temperature' for an indefinite period of time.

Well designed (think the hot pyroceram units from Corning in the '60s/70s) they hold food above the microbial growth level.

Badly designed (just about everyone else), they hold food at the ideal temperature range to grow food-borne illness perfectly.

There was a phase in the early to mid '70s of cross-purposing appliances. If the warmer was done right, I could see it being a definite asset.

Food Warmers

Hi Mike, I certainly would NOT have eaten any casserole that was baked on a Tappan food warmer, they do not get hot enough to bake food properly or evenly, we have a Tappan cook-top in the museum kitchen with this neat feature.

The food warmer on the WP portable DW was a novel idea but since you would have to keep a portable DW plugged in it probably would not get used much.

Hi John L.,

I know right? My mom would have never done that if there had been raw meat or fish in that casserole for sure. I do recall it was steaming hot though. It took a couple of hours.
I thought that was a neat range. My folks sold it with that house. It was a gas self clean version. Burner with the brain, built in vent fan, and a huge fluorescent work light. The main problem was the oven had no pilot light, and it was troublesome to ignite.
