Whirlpool Dishwasher DU1055STSB1

I have a tall tub Whirlpool dishwasher making a loud buzzing sound when its washing. We puchased it in February 2007 so it is coming up on 7 years of daily use.

Since this DW has two motors (one to wash and one to drain) the sound is only during the wash portions of the cycles. I took apart the top portion of the pump assembly and cleaned out the strainer and chopper screen/blade. Found a few pieces of soft corn and gunk. Nothing major. But it still making the same sound.

Any ideas what's causing this? Its not cleaing as well is it did when we first purchased it either.

To replace the entire pump assembly will cost $169.75 + the cost of a repair guy to replace it. By that time I could buy a new DW cheaper then repairing this one.

Any ideas or suggetions would be greatly appreciated!

I really miss the reverse rack Maytag we had in our first house! That thing was a dynamo! Never missed a lick! Sold it with the house!

We had this problem recently and it was a few toothpicks and bread bad wire ties had gotten past the drain entry point. I fixed it by doing the same thing you did to your machine. So that's not it.

How old is your machine? Model number?

DU1055XTSB1 purchased February 2007 almost 7 years old

Since I cleaned mine out Tuesday afternoon the noise is not as bad as it was but its still there. I found a piece of a pecan, some soft corn and a little gunk all floating in the sump area near the chopper. It almost sounds like it comes from the motor area/impeller area. We have always used our dishwasher everyday. It got a real workout during the holidays. It could be starting to wear out! Who knows!

I just don't want it to get jammed up and catch fire. My wife and I do not leave the house leaving the DW running. Nor do we turn it on and go to bed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

it could be part of the impellor has a nick, or slice that is out of whack and rubbing inside while running......

had this once with the dishdrawer......using an exacto knife and trimmed that section smooth again, noise all gone...

it could be the simplest thing that is overlooked~

Slightly Noisy WP Tall Tub DW

I would keep running it, the noise will either go away or get worse, it is fairly likely that the main pump seal is starting to fail the tiny amount of water that got past the seal has started to ruin the main motors bearings.

If this is the case it will get louder and eventually the main motor will refuse to run at all.

If you like the DW I would fix it, as it is less expensive and less wasteful than buying a new DW every 5-10 years, appliances that get a lot of use do require repairs from time to time.

There is NO safety hazard in continuing to use the DW, this type of problem would be very unlikely to cause a fire.

Noise

Since I posted this thread I cleaned out the sump once again. The DW is now quiet and cleaning great. I'm starting to think it may have been a rubber foot off one of my wife's cutting boards causing the problem. She discovered one of the rubber feet is missing from a board she uses on a regular basis. Makes me think pieces of it may have gotten in the pump assembly beyond the chopper blade. It probably finished breaking down and went on down the drain.

I just didn't to buy a new DW or repair one at this point of time!

My eight year old Whirlpool dishwasher is going down the tubes. I saw that the chopper blade was not working, so I bought a new chopper assembly. It didn't work, so I looked and all the nubs were worn off of the recirculating pump. I tried to glue it together, but it lasted a week. I can't use the dishwasher without the chopper blade because there is another filter on the other side of the pump. I'm in the same boat as the guy above on here. Is there any type of adhesive that I could glue the chopper assembly to the recirculating pump and it will last a while?

If the impeller on your recirculating pump has failed, then I would suggest trying to replace it, rather than trying to use fixes that could block spray arms, water diverters or worse, other parts of the pump. 

 

Replacing the chopper blade was a good start - seeing as those would probably get a pretty decent run of usage daily.

Choppers On WP Built TT DWs

If the impeller is damaged it needs to be replaced and in most cases the impeller and seal assembly is not available separately. The best coerce of action is to replace the main motor assembly which includes the seal and impeller.

If the DW has had nearly 8 years of daily use this is the best way to go.

Makes me wonder if what Maytag proport to have with their current line--a chopper that is more durable than the original design such as this.

Update on the Whirlpool DU1055XTSB1 dishwasher from January

Well this poor baby bit the dust this past Thursday. The buzzing turned in to a screeching sound. It also stopped draining the water all the way out. I took it apart once again last month because of this and found next to nothing in the sump. I check the price on a new pump assembly again and it is now $185.00 to replace + cost of the repair guy. I don't have the time (or patience) to do it myself! Not worth it!

We ordered a Whirlpool Gold Series 2434 Tall Tub Built In Dishwasher in Black with a full stainless steel tub. It has the removable filters that can be taken out and cleaned by hand. It is model #WDF750SAYB. Should be here this coming Thursday. Paid $439.00 + tax with free delivery at Best Buy online. Normally a $600.00 DW per the web site. I will do the installation myself. I've had a couple of bad experiences with installers in the past.
