The racks in my Whirlpool portable dishwasher are getting really bad, tines are breaking off, wearing off on the tips. I found a place online that sells new racks at $142.00 each OUCH. For the cost of two new racks, I could buy a new dishwasher. I have also seen the tine repair kits, which are more reasonable than new racks. But how well do the kits work? Does anyone have any experience with the kits? I've had the dishwasher for about 6 years and it was used when I got it. I have been thinking about getting new portable, but can't decide on what brand GE, Whirlpool, Kenmore or Maytag are the only ones that make full size portables now that I know of.

Have you thought about visiting the local used dealers? Chances are you could pick up a replacement set of racks for very cheap and extend the life of your current dishwasher. There should be no difference between portable and built in...

No, but I'm going to give it a try. There's a used appliance store not to far from me that I go buy almost every day. There's a few across the river on the Illinois side that I'm going to call as well.

I checked eBay also, they had some but the measurements didn't match up, I have a saved search for Whirlpool and Kenmore dishwasher racks.

I might be able to help!

I have a lower rack from a kenmore which also takes a silverware rack where yours would probably have the door mounted rack. If you want some pictures, let me know!My wife loves when I get rid of things. Sometimes I think I should just put an empty garbage can out front so she will think I am cleaning out the garage or attic!

Rack

My silverware basket sits across the front of the lower basket. The rack has four wheels on each side 2 in front 2 in back. The dimensions of the basket are as follows:

Length: 20 1/2"
Width: Almost 20"

There's a cone in the middle of the basket, which is removable. Here's a picture of the bottom rack. The top rack has problems staying on it's track, or more like the track has a hard time staying attached to the side of the dishwasher.

Thatt helps. You have a DuraWash type dishwasher. Everyone here was assuming it was a PowerClean type dishwasher. Big difference in the racks.

The older PowerCleans had the cone in the bottom rack. The newer ones had direct feed to the spray arm below the top rack and thus a totally open bottom rack for dishes and pots & pans. There's a bottom of the line Maytag that's $299 that uses the PowerClean design and it has a cone in the bottom rack and a short cone in the top rack to feed the top sprayer.

Racks

I saw some racks on eBay that had a cone that was bigger at the bottom and got smaller as it went up. They the top rack available too, and it had a spray arm underneath it. I had one like this back in the 80's and 90's. My top rack has no spray arm underneath it. This must be the sprayer for the bottom rack. It does a good job cleaning, and I use Dollar General brand of dishwasher detergent, and usually don't have to rewash anything.

Any ideas what year this dishwasher was made?

Jim
