Hi All,

Well after all my vacuum posts, I'm finally posting a washer question.

I've got this Whirlpool washer, new in 1993, and its starting to dance across the floor in spin cycle. The first time I thought it was a load balance problem, but it does it all the time now. I'm suspecting a spring or a mount for the tub is broken. My question is how do I get the front skins off to get at the tub? There is no obvious pattern to the screws on this machine, so I suspect that things are snapped on or slid on. Any advice on how to get the covers off?

Things are indeed slid and snapped on. Here's the drill:

First, remove those two little screws at the bottom front corners of the console. Now, lift up on the console from the bottom; it swings up on a hinge. Swing it up and back.

You will now see two weird-looking gold-colour clips. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, pry the clips loose. There will also be a little wire harness for the lid switch; unplug its connector.

Once you've done those things, the entire cabinet just tilts forward and lifts away from the front. To reinstall the cabinet, you need to be certain that the cabinet engages the two tabs at the front of the base that the direct-drive components sit on. I'm including a linkie for your reference. For all the shortcomings of Whirly DD's, the cabinet design is the best in the business.

You might find a broken spring, but I'm suspecting the pads are worn.

If you run a jumper wire across the lid switch terminal you unplugged, the washer will operate with the cabinet off. Be careful if you do this.

I'm off to give this a try. I figured it was something simple but not obvious. Need to get this back in action as the dirty cloths are piling up.

Pads.......

It looks to be the pads. I wedge a screwdriver to put more pressure on the pads and the suspension tightens right up. Now, can I just drop the drive enough to get the pads out? There are the three "bean shaped" ones and three square, white ones. Its probably a good idea to replace them all, right?

So, if there are any tricks to dropping the drive, please share. Would there be any reason to remove the agitator? or does the drive just slip out with it in place?

It doesn't look like I'd need to lower the drive much.

pads are out

I was able to lift the suspension enough to get the pads out. Now to get some new ones. We have AP Wagner supply here in Buffalo and Rochester. I'll get out there tomorrow. Hopefully this will do the trick.

Also check the counterbalance spring at the rear of the tub. If it is broken off its mount, the tub will lean forward and hit the cabinet when spinning. The spring is mounted to a hole in the base frame of the washer.

I replaced the pads and it now stays in place as it spins. Many thanks to all the help from this board. Without you guys, I'd never had known about the pads. Thanks again.
