Our Whirlpool Electronic control washer from 1993 has started to act up on us. When we were washing clothes this morning we noticed that when it reached the end of the wash cycle, it just stopped. It did not go into the neutural drain and spin. It just sat there. The machine did not power down. It just sat there.
I pressed the "spin" button on the control panel and it started pumping out the water and went into a neuteral drain and then started to spin normally.
I ran it again, and I noticed right after the wash cycle ended the lid switch made a few clicking noises. It didn't do this when I selected the spin option. It only does it at the end of the wash cycle.
Could this be a control board problem? I think it could be because all the mechanicals in the machine are working, but the error occurs only at the end of the wash cycle. When you press the "rinse and spin" option, it works fine. It rinses and then goes into the drain and spin mode. There are no error codes on the control panel.
Am I on the right track?

Most of the non spinning whirlpools I've seen have always had a broken lid switch.

When you raise and lower the lid, does the lid switch consistently click?

If you push the plunger down, does it move at half an inch click and stop, or is there freeplay when you push down on the switch.

It could be that the plastic bracket that holds the lid switch in place is broken. With the machine unplugged, reach over the tub ring and grab the lid switch. See if it seems loose or whether its firmly in place.

But the machine DOES drain & spin if you press the "spin" button. It only stops at the end of the wash cycle.
I checked the lid switch, there is no play and it gives a resounding "click" when you press it in.
