I recently 'inherited' a matched set from a tenant who didn't want to take them, kind of a funny story.. they bought a new house, and these were in the house they purchased, and they gave them to me... the washer is a LAX710Pxxx. How old are these? I am guessing early 80s ?

Are these the belt drive 'good' Whirlpools I have heard of here?

Plan to hook 'em up and see what I've got.

Doesn't seem to be a good model no. Can't find it on Sears site anyway. Please double check the model no.

doesn't drain...

I was wrong on the model #. It is indeed a LA710XPW3...

I hooked it up on Sat to see what happens... fills OK, agitates OK (very splashy...looks like a candidate for that HE detergent!), but NO drain. Hums, acts like it's trying, but no drain. After I mopped out the half tub of water, and advanced the timer, it would spin, but still no draining was occurring.

Being a beginner here, I'm thinking of buying the do-it-yourself book and diving in. I have no investment at this point...

The model number doesn't make a match at RepairClinic.com, and I'm not sure if this is mid 1980s belt drive or a more recent direct drive machine.

If it's direct-drive (there's no access panel on the back), there's not much to the drain process. The pump attaches directly to one end of the motor, driven directly by the motor shaft. The motor is reversible for agitate and spin/drain. When it runs in the agitate direction, the pump forces water back into the tub rather than draining it out. In the spin/drain direction, it drains. Or should. The pump apparently isn't frozen-up or the motor couldn't run at all. Perhaps the tub outlet is blocked by a stray sock or other small article that got out of the wash basket?

If it's a belt-drive machine, then the pump could be frozen and the machine will still run, but under a load and not for long before the belt would/should start burning. Another possibility is that the flapper valve arm isn't properly engaged in the agitate shift bar, the flapper valve is broken and stuck in recirculate mode, or the impeller is loose from the pulley shaft.

Closest match is with a xpw3 suffix is either LA7700XPW3 or LA7899XPW3. Both direct drive models. Check the model again. Look at the model plate under the lid or if by if it has an access panel on the back, meaning it is a belt drive, look under lid or on the bottom of the cabinet. Not on any sticker that might still be on it or literature.

Sorry to send you on wild goose chases re: model number.

I looked again. LA5710XPW3 or maybe LAS710XPW3 (not sure it's a number "5" or a letter "S")

Thanks for patience, folks. I checked model # again.

LA5710XPW3 or LAS710XPW3 (not sure if it's a letter "S" or a number "5")

For model LA5710XPW3, RepairClinic came up with two belt-drive pumps, a belt-drive Surgilator, a standard belt, and various other belt-drive components . . but there's also a direct-drive motor coupler in the listing!

I'm thinking it's probably a belt-drive machine. Does it have a recirculating (removeable cartridge "bed-of-nails") lint filter? Does the filter work?

Changing the pump is very simple, assuming that's the problem. Could be a hose is clogged, though.

Acording to Sundberg's It is a belt drive. It's easy to take the back off and turn the belt by hand and watch to see if the pump pulley turns. If it doesn't turn replace the pump. If it turns you could have a plugged hose or the pump could still be bad with a problem such as the flapper broken or the acutator rod bent or broken or just lint or something else clogging it up. If it has a pump with clips to remove the bottom cover,(It probably doesn't because it appears to be a late model belt drive) you can try taking the cover off to look for problems. Or just replace the pump.
