Whirlpool "Lint Bin" Dryers

I remember this particular model of dryer from Whirpool in the early-mid '90s. It was a very short-lived model. I think Whirlpool stated that up to 100 loads could be dried before the filter needed cleaning.

I examined the filter on the machine at an appliance store, and didn't believe the '100 loads' claim, and thought 10 loads was more realistic, for decent drying. Consumer Reports at the time stated that the configuration of the airflow through the unique filter made the machine noisy. I was still intrigued by the thought of being able to go several loads before cleaning the filter, and would have purchased one if I was in the market for a new dryer.

Did anyone own one of these machines, and if so, how did it perform?

Never had or used one, but saw them in store displays. I also recall mention that the airflow made it noisy.

Fisher & Paykel has a similar system on their SmartLoad topload dryer. An extra-fine self-scraping filter screen cleans itself when the lint layer reaches 1/8", deposits into a collection bucket in the sidewall of the drum. I've had my SmartLoad since October 2004, and have dumped the bucket maybe 6 times, haven't kept count. It works quite well.

The 100-Load Lint Filter WP/Dryers were for the most part as mentioned quite noisy, but they also had some-kind of a Mechanical problem, that warranted them being discontinued. I forget what was wrong with them, but I would actually like to locate one, just to check them out. As far as the Noise, since it would be used in my Garage, it wouldn't matter to me about the Noise it makes while Drying Laundry. I'll have to try to remember to ask my Sears Salesman Friend, if he remember's what problems that they had and will report back...

It was a nice idea, if they would have thought about the Noise Level and whatever problems it occured, to maybe correct instead of a total discontinue of them...

Our 1960 Model 80 KM dryer had a variation on that theme. There was a door on top of the dryer which opened to expose a foot-long bag which held the lint from many, many loads. It was like a smaller version of a vacuum cleaner bag. It was also a noisy dryer.

I'd forgotten that feature made a comeback of sorts during the '90s....
