Whirlpool LXA 7800

I found a Whirlpool Avacado sturdy looking washer in my niece's basement, hooked it up but does not agitate nor spin, but drains. I think a new belt is in order, are they hard to replace? I give the washer perhaps, oh, I don't know, duh, circa 1978? She already has a Maytag A608, and wants the Whilpool to go. It is in really good shape, especially the control panel, with only a little surface rust in the lower left cabinet, so I think I shall save it if it is not a 10 swear word job. Phil

LXA is closer to 1972.

Whirlpool belts can be tricky ... if one doesn't know the tricks. Instructions used to be outlined on the replacement belt package, but been a long time since I've seen them, don't know if that still the case. Try a Google search, the procedure may be detailed on a help-site somewhere.

Thanks DADoes, I did find a proceedure on Google! Looks like a major swear job because one has to touch and loosen so many parts, makes me appreciate my Maytag so much more. I am going to attempt it, however, to save it from the krusher!

If it doesn't agitate or spin, but drains, wouldn't that be a bad wig-wag since the pump is connected in series with the other pulleys?

Actually that makes great sense, Westy! Pump, agitatior, spin all run on the same belt, according to the diagram, but what the hell is a Wig Wag? Is it an electric clutch? (I am so not a Whirlpool expert) Phil

What is a wig wag?

The wig-wag is an double electromagnet that shifts the trans. You can check to see if either side is "open" If it is not open, the wires that attach to the wig-wag break sometimes. The wires move back and forth, as they are attached to the wig-wag.

You remove the back cover, tip the machine toward it's front. Do not let the machine sit this way very long, as oil will start to drip out of the transmition. You will see if the belt is broken of course.
The belt is not really that hard to change. If you can replace the belt on an automobile, you can replace the belt on a Whirlpool.
