How old would you guess a Whirlpool Thin Twin to be, that is almond in color and has the glass dryer door window. Early to mid 80s? Would this machine still be worth having over a newer GE/Kenmore/Fridigaire clone stackables? Or would it be better to stack an older, used F/L Fridigaire. My son is moving into an apartment, and the stackables are all that will fit, so we are looking around, trying to figure out what would be the best units to purchase used, as he can't afford the $1,000+ price of a new set.

Late 80's I would say. It is direct drive and the dryer should have the electronic sensor. If it works then I would get it. the dryer drum is almost 6 cu ft and has the filter up front. The washer should have the Surgilator agitator or maybe the dual action.
yes, late 1980 to early 1990's....I always liked the glass in the dryer, so few had them, very nice machines, full size too...this would be my first choice, unless you can find a good maytag stackable....I got mine on craiglist for $50.00, and it's digital....shop around...

Fifty dollars? Must be nice. No one around here sells ANY brand of stackable unit on Craigslist for less than $300. I've been looking,unless I missed a quick buy. I did talk to an appliance store operator today who had one of these, and had just sold it. He said pretty much the same thing you said above, that they are direct drive and should be servicable well into the future, and that he would buy one of these over any of the other plastic tub models out there.

I know the glass door model was made up to at least 1991 when I purchased mine. That thing lasted 17 years w/o any repairs till last fall when the washer motor burnt out. It was well worth the $1280 I paid for it in 1991. So that is $75 a year, $6.25 a month, I think that is very good considering the quality of machines made today.
To buy the same quality today you must buy the Maytag clone ThinTwin, not the Whirlpool, but no more glass dryer door!
That glass dryer door came off the KitchenAid dryer, then moved to the ThinTwin and now is on the lid of the TOL Maytag top loading washer, Whirlpool keeps that glass door in at least something their producing from year to year!

The glass door was first introduced when the original,full size Whirlpool Stacked set wasintroduced in 1985.it was not available on other seperate clothes dryers until 1993.The high end Whirlpool and KitchenAid Dryers were available with it.However,it was eventualy pulled when the ECA (Energy conservationm Administration)raised a brow or two regarding the extra energy used with glass door dryers so,it was canned until the Duets then the Cabrios were introduced.Because they spin faster,the ECA was more leaniant regarding a glass as aposed to metal door on the dryers.

check my collections to see the one I got for $50.00...and I turbo charged it, but its a regular size tub and I had to use an orbital agitator in it, it would churn some serious action, and It was not a 2 speed....but I like that I can adjust the wash up to 19min, rinse to 6min, and last spin to 8min...digital was better....
always wanted a thin/twin, but couldn't find any, once I gave up, I found 3, and picked this one....never available when you want it....that's the way it goes
