there's some other id'ing I've learned - smaller lid on the BD vs. DD, the panel indentations on the front, near the floor of the unit, and Design 2000 logo, which I now see...thanks.

Rick - thanks, dual action...ok, I'll check out what that one means... dual action sounds like it's different speeds and moves according to laundry application settings. ?

These are VERY GOOD UNITS and thanks for posting them. They are an early DD washer set and are both very solid and reliable machines.

Phil, dual-action is the agitator with a spiral auger (technically called "clothes mover"). It was initially released as an exclusive on Kenmore belt-drive machines but of course later appeared on direct-drive machines.
The Surgilator with "wings" on the skirt introduced to the LFA series (of which the ad machine is one) super-capacity/18lb models (of which the ad machine is not) is called the Double-Duty Super Surgilator.
The first direct-drive models (both Kenmore and Whirlpool) did not have a dual-action agitator, so the ad machine, although tagged Design 2000, is an early model but not an *early* model.

DDSS - sounds like a mental condition. I think it's rubbing off on me, I'm beginning to understand...
why this appliance business is more confusing now. They had so many changes in parts, features, and color options. The housewife/man of years gone were probably begging for help on "which washer is best and does what, when, how? "
Now do you all get competitive about how well the water is moved and measure vortex, velocities, dirt quantity removed, thread levels retained, and color retention with maximum cleaning? Then there is my simple Maytag that just cleans ...but I like the features, colors, and other options some machines offered. Years ago, I used to have work that would keep me washing clothes often...but it's still interesting to note, not all washers move the water in the same way. I still say, windows on washers and dryers should have been standard...and more colors always, standard.
You could carried away with all the cool machines.

thanks Dadoes, Martin, and Tom - I'd love to see a page here in aw.org that gives you a gallery option and instead of the variety of machines owned and cared for by members, have these organised by brand and chronologically arranged to view. YOU ALL have some amazing machines, but they're scattered throughout this website...and my compliments always go out to all of you, who collect or just care to keep these once unique crafted, however imperfect or perfect, pieces of American machinery still ticking and looking sweet as new.
