Whirlpool Washer Rant!

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Just went to Lowe's tonight and bought the Whirlpool WTW4816.

:unsure: Wait, I'm confused Pat. WTW4816 shows up as some type of weird off market novelty/export model. Doesn't even seem to have a transmission or brake. I don't even know why its being offered in the US.

Why not get a descent direct drive or dependable care?

GWTXW-8500-NFD is a good middle line model, comes with dual action agitator and stainless steal inner and outer tubs. Ball bearing balance ring, Porcelain enamel lid and cabinet. They're now offering a free 24oz Clorox bottle with the Tide and Downy. Flood Check hoses standard. It has that goofy temperature/cycle matrix selection scheme yes and that grey galore control panel but it gives you everything else you need for the price.

Wiring diagram indicates nothing superfluous besides the indicator lights.

I go with this as your daily driver.

I still have the 74 Kenmore. That's going to stay. They are just machines at the end of the day. Not taking any of it out anyway so I don't let these things have that control over me.

You can still hold on to them and appreciate them without letting them have control over you.

But to each his own and I respect that.

Me, I let washer control me LOL and I love it.

I wanted new and despite the dislikes of the vmw platform i like them. I can't justify the nearly $1000+ for a Maytag MVWP586GW. If I'm going to go that high might as well spend a few hundred more and get Speed Queen. Not crazy about the TR series and the TC just don't do it for me either. Did Speed Queen already, besides The current TC won't top the 2012/13 AWN432 i had for 7 yrs.

Would you be willing to spend $1000+ for a new direct drive or dependable care if they still made them?

Pierre, that happens to be my favorite Kenmore washer. 3 Speed motor and all the desired features without being any more complex. I deeply miss the direct drives and wish they still made them brand new. I wish appliances stores predominately sold direct drives and dependable cares; with the VMW design contained only to some portables and cheap compact washers.

I wish I could walk into an appliance stores in 2025 and see something like this in the Direct drive design. I would buy it new without hesitation.

If they had the features and build quality to match then yes. Speed Queen overcharges for machines that don't even have protective porcelain coatings on the top and lid..YET the outer drum is Porcelain on steel ?

My honest opinion is that if Speed Queen had porcleain tops the price would be even higher. People just don't want to take inflation and raw material prices into account. This is in part why appliances are what they are today. Prices have remained steady on the machines themselves, but production cost has shot way up. At one point in the past appliances were like cars: major investments with little cost difference between the two. Today cars are an investment, appliances are disposable.

I'd still go with the Speed Queen TC5 regardless or a Speed Queen front load as both provide superior results on superior longevity despite the cost cutting.
