I have a friend that has an approx. 6 yr. old Whirlpool washer that won't spin when it has a load of towels (heavy) etc. - Can anyone tell me what needs to be done to correct this problem.

Probably needs a new clutch, you will either need to replace the two top transmission oil seals or replace the transmission also, if the clutch is slipping it is almost always caused by oil in it.

Is it a pretty decent machine otherwise? If so, I'd say yes! I have an 11 year old Kenmore Elite and would likely choose the fix-it route as opposed to buying new. To get anything that is decent in today's machines, you are looking at $$$.
