Looks like a late 60s model -- am hoping to pick up this week just for fun and parts! (I should really pick up the weight bench to work off the spare tire I've grown lately!)

Not late 60s. More like 1977 or 78 right before the plastic lid handles. A great washer nontheless.

Yeah definitely mid 70's. My Mom's old 'Pool had the same exact panel set up, just the print and background color were reversed.

I had one almost like it in my first apartment - it was a model lower because it had the dial for temp instead of the buttons. It also had the brush lint filter it was 18 lbs from 1974 machine. Really great washer.

Rusty Whirlpool

So, here it is, in all its rusted glory. Just picked it up yesterday for free. Other than the cabinet, everything else is in good order, just that it sat for many years on a back porch so the belts disintegrated. I did plug it in and it works fine -- will probably part it out, but might be a fun restoration. I didn't realize it's an 18-pounder -- nice capacity.

Another angle of this Harvest Gold beauty. Fun dial console, and cycles are: Normal, Knit, Gentle and Permanent Press. Not sure what the difference between Knit and Gentle would be -- the lid instructions don't go into cycle detail...

Knit cycle has a 1-stage cool down ... after wash there's a partial drain, refill with cold water, 2 mins agitate, the continue with the normal rinse & final spin sequences.  This as compared to Perm Press which has a 2-stage cool down, and Gentle which has no cool down.

It this machine an LAA or LDA model?

the cool-down in the Knit cycle was a real surprise. I have the same machine, rusted almost in the same spots. I had pix & stories in another thread, which you missed. It was the day before you found this. Cool coincidence, Todd. These beasts are indestructible. The surgilator is standard, not super. Enjoy this machine, very versatile, lots of fun, tons of room in the tub. See L's thread #38158 Funny Whirlpool advert.

Solid Seller

If I could get one of these when I was in business in the '80s, it would sell quickly. It was a good reliable machine, and people liked the features. Some of them did rust, however.

Whirlpool Lid Switches

How come some whirlpools have the lid switch on the right side of the door and some have the switch hidden behind the door? The 72 whirlpool supreme 80 set I remember growing up had the switch on the right of the lid (very convient for easy by-pass), and the 72 whirlpool supreme 80 set greg saved for me has it on back of the door? Why were some made one way and some another way?

My husband says it's a rust bucket and part the thing out, but I'm thinking with a 2 x 4 reinforcement behind the rusted area, it should be solid. Everything else looks good -- just a couple of belt replacements. I'd love to see this thing up & running again and I just happen to have a little room in the wash house for it...

Before going too far it would be a good idea to make sure the outer tub is in
good shape and not leaking over the base plate. Also check the pump (right at
the pulley bering) and see if there is any signs of leakage.
I ran into a quite a few where the pump would seep
some water onto the belt during wash or rinse cycle. You wouldnt nessearily see
any water on the floor because it wasnt a large amount.
But the belt would then pick the water up from the pump pulley and sling it
on the side of the cabinet and on to the transmission causing quite a bit of damage.

Super Surgilator

Actually, that is a Super Surgilator agitator. Super because the fins extend beyond the baseplate. The only agitator above this one is the Double Duty Super Surgilator which is the model with the wings on the baseplate.

Malcolm, you are correct -- and the agitator does indeed state on the cap:
"Super Surgilator." Interesting...so did Whirlpool continue to call their agitators Super Surgilators even when they introduced the "wings" on the bottom?

I think they changed the name to double duty super surgilator, when they came out with the "winged" version.

I prefer the Super Surgilator to the one with the wings. I just feel the wings offer potential snagging risk of clothing as they slice through the water.

Actually,

All Surgilator fins extend beyond the plate; we just need to find out when Whirlpool starting calling them Super, and not just plain old "reg'lar."

My mid 60s washer agitator fins do not extend beyond the base...the fins are almost squared off at the base but don't go beyond the base...is that because it's not "Super?" (need to get a better photo one of these days...)

I like the caps on these machines....taller than most, and hidden under the pop top, is the bolt that holds it down and secure to the agitator, it won't unscrew if your turn the agitator by hand......I have a chromed topped one

When WP changed from bakelite to polypropylene for their agitator, and the part went from black to pale blue (white later on) the new 'version' was the super because indeed, the fins extend beyond the base. Whirlpool made a topic of discussion of this when introducing it to their techs in some late 1960s technical literature.

As Washerlover said above, the bakelite version has flush fins which do not extend beyond the base.
