Whirlpool's Miracle Gas Kitchen

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Thats absolutely wild

for a gas kitchen. What a concept. I really like the drop down refrigerator !! The moving dishwasher - not so much.

But to have a Laundry/Bar room HOLLA !!

Funny how we have been striving for "flat-flush cooking surfaces" all these years and finally by the 1980's got something that works with the refinement of induction.

It's interesting to note how many features in this kitchen became reality later in some way; it's too bad appliance companies don't put this kind of thought into today's appliances.

I like all the Whirlpool logos on those futuristic appliances. They remind me of that thing in "2001 A Space Odyssey" on board the Pan Am spaceship that shot out the meals. In the above link, I'm not too sure how many servings that lady is going get out of that rotisserie parakeet. Fun stuff, thanks for posting.,

Did you notice the "laundry center"?  Looks like a wall-mounted control panel for a 33" Combo with a much narrower washer underneath in the cabinet.

After reading what Bob wrote, I was wondering about the combo myself, so I went back to the original full resolution picture and enlarged it. It seems it is a standard Whirlpool combo of the time, but the wood doors in front of it makes it look thinner...

That is the first time I have ever seen a smooth-top Pyroceram range top fired by a gas burner!   Fascinating!!

Years ago, I remember seeing a BH&G Kitchen Ideas book, 1959 I believe, that featured a Whirlpool gas kitchen but with 'current' appliances of the day.  They made mention of the gas washer-dryer combo bien sûr, but what fascinated me was the gas dishwasher...  I have never seen any information about a Whirlpool gas dishwasher since.

Roomba Dishwasher

My question is did it return to the sink for actual operation or was it self contained and operated at any of the stops along the way ?

What, no gas garbage disposer? Can opener? Knife sharpener? Clock?

Plumbing the ideal combustible gas/air mixture? There's a reason the gas company doesn't do that.

Click on down to the 1962 Ford Galaxie. Ewww! Ford was using the (yet to be invented) Star Trek formula of alternate releases sucked. 59 Ford, stylin! 60 Ford, ugly as mud. 61 Ford, stylin! 62 Ford, ugly as mud. It continued past those. Chevy did the same thing using different years. Then longabout 64, style became irrelevant, they were ALL ugly. Yeesh, that's been 50 years now with few exceptions.

This Is....

....A huge example of what I call "Testosterone Tech" - the force-fitting of a technology to a need that doesn't really exist, just because the product engineers in question can.

While the use of gas for so many devices is impressive, where was the need? Who was clamoring for all this? And once this "dream kitchen" was out there on tour, who was itching to buy it? No one, that's who.

The point seems to have been "because I can," not "because there's a need." Decades before Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor, someone seems to have been going "ARRH, ARRH, ARRH!"

P.S.: I am willing to bet that none of the product engineers involved would have been very enthusiastic about cleaning that rotisserie.
