Whirltag/Maypool

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

I think Whirlpool knows what it's doing and obviously sees the value in Maytag. They probably had to up the offer anyway as Maytag stock was $18.58 at the final bell today, higher than it's offer of a $18/share of a few weeks ago. WP has been given a hurried "due-dilligence" period to examine Maytag and I'm sure sees the value of even just the names that Maytag has under it's wing. One analyst said last week that Maytag's biggest problems were (lousy) products and their cost, both of which Whirlpool could solve fairly quickly.

Finally, Maytag will have a neutral drain too! ;-)

Follow directions... remove head from A**...

SELL TO WHIRLPOOL!
Thats what I would LOVE to say to some of the MAytag people!
As a stockholder, I voted against the Triton aquisition, I am 100% behind Whirlpool taking over.
They could solve the CRAP problem, and hopefully get things running on track again.
Typing this from North Canton, where I have been since Friday, it would be awesome to have quality vacuums coming from this place once again.

Don't Cry...

Maybe the reason WP raised it's offer was they were able to finally see the data and facts on "Swirl-Away" draining during due dilligence at Maytag...We must have it!!

"I liked it so much, I bought the company!" (wasn't that a Remington shaver commercial?)

Has anyone had the thought that Whirlpool just wants to buy the name, to make it go away forever?
I mean, Maytag was really Whirlpool's only competition in the US, at one time anyway, after GM Frigidare quit making washers.
That would be a sad thing, but with the Maytag name gone, Whirlpool would make the profit back in no time, because the Maytag name will be gone. When anyone bought a machine for many, many years, there was three top notch makers to buy from, Maytag, Whirlpool and Frigidare.
Now it would only be the Frigidare name, and then Whirlpool.
Leslie...give us the scoop buzzing around Whirlpool right now! :)
Just a thought.

Euthanize Maytag?

I've thought about that, but in all reality, the Maytag name (let alone Hoover, JennAir, et al.) are worth way too much in revenue to just let die out. Just speculating, but that may be a way for WP to pass Federal anti-trust scrutiny - keep the Maytag infrastructure for some products intact and separate from WP lines. I read that if WP/Maytag is done, Whirlpool would hold 81% of the gas dryer market...

Don't forget about number 2 for years now, Genital Electric. Formidable competition in refrigeration and cooking for sure - even if we don't like the laundry products, there are millions of those out there too.

bled dry...

I've been coming to North Canton for 5 years now to visit Tom and hunt Hoovers. Most everyone around here seems to feel Hoover has been plundered and pillaged, first by Chicago Pacific and then Maytag. In the past couple of years I;ve watched Maytag liquidate Hoover assets(such as land, and the IP plant here) and just plain give stuff away(the HHC and Hoover park)
Makes no sense...Hoover had one thing in common with Maytag that they should have realized:
The main factory is smack in the center of North Canton, much as Maytag's factory is in Newton. A centerpiece of the community.
By sucking(no pun intended)the life out of Hoover, Maytag didn't just hose the people who worked here making vacuums, they hosed everyone who lives here, as that plant generated alot of revenue for the city and county.
Maytag also blames Hoover for its "slump" which I think is plain BS. Nothing was produced that was not approved by the folks in Newton.
Today Hoover is little more than a name, as the only things left still being made here are steam vacs and commercial cleaners now and then.
I hope to see Whirlpool put some life back into Hoover.

Greg,
I like your way of thinking! I think that you are right.
It is so funny, but when I was thinking in the terms of big names, GE never entered my mind. I don't know why.
I for one would love to see the Maytag name saved.
Wouldn't it be great if kept the Maytag reliability for old specs, and mixed that with the Whirlpool knowledge over the years. Come up with a washer and dryer that would knock your socks off.
It will all be interesting.
Maytag is still such a big name. It is funny, but I bet that 80% of consumers won't even know that this even happend. They won't know, or care that Whirlpool bought Maytag.
It will all be so interesting. I just hope that the boy's at Whirlpool know, and respect the name of Maytag, and keep that alive.
This is sad to me.
I must need more Prozak or something.
Leslie....what is going on?

Hi Jeff, I have to agree with you, after being in North Canton last fall and seeing what Hoover's decline had done to the city in general. Like they say, what goes around comes around and I am sure that Newton is very concerned at this point. I too have great hopes that Whirlpool with bring some really good things to both Hoover and Maytag. Terry

Gansky states:

"WP has been given a hurried "due-dilligence" period to examine Maytag and I'm sure sees the value of even just the names that Maytag has under it's wing"

***************************************************************

Maytag has quite a loyal following. Gregs comment above matches much of what this is about; as well as the synergies the two can bring to the table.

Whirlpool has received nearly unanimous support from the trade (dealers-retailers etc.) regarding a possible merger. It will be most interesting to watch the unfolding events.

Maypool, Norgetag, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef

What will happen to all the names that Maytag absorbed such as Norge, Magic Chef, Amana, Admiral, Crossley, Hoover, etc?

Then as far as actual washers, it would remain to be seen what Whirlpool will do with the Maytag line up. Would there still be some kind of Maytag or would they just disappear and all we would have is Whirlpool/Kenmore/Roper/Kitchenaid?

Tune in later to see how it all turns out.

I'd pee myself if WP makes a real POS product as its BOL and throws a Maytag badge on it.

I wonder if Maytag engineered DW-ers will become Sears' BOL insted of Frigidaire.. HMMMMM.

If Whirlpool buys Maytag they should junk the current lineup of Maytags and go back to building the dependable care. All metal inner and ourter tubs. Make it their TOL machine like Maytag used to be. Belt drive no DD.

i can go along with westie2-WP should junk all of Maytags current designs and go back to the tried and true-and No more DD.Shred the designs for those too.And if they don't want to do anything constructivew with Hoover-please sell it to someone who will!!

Heading to Newton ---

Friday!!

Skyler and I are meeting Don (jetaction) and his partner, Scott in Newton on Friday morning to see the museum and factory store (yes, again!) and then on to the Iowa State Fair for some Kirby and VitaMix demos!

It will be very interesting to see the reactions of the residents in Newton (and employees too) to the unfolding events. Be they guarded optimisim, this is the conservative midwest, or outright disgust, it will be great to get a firsthand feel for the merger talks.

Newton

Hi Greg. I would be anxious to hear of your trip to Newton and the reaction of the Maytag employees there.
My visit there after the convention revealed a cute little town. Looked like a nice place to live and work at Maytag.

While at the fair

Be sure to pick up on of those slicer/dicers along with a set of nevr dull knives. The fun part is the first 10 people who hand over their $20 as a bonus get one of those fabulous little orange or lemon plugs to squeeze juice straight out of the fruit. Me, ever the one for a fairground sales pitch. LOL

Merger

Yes, it remains to be seen if anti-trust government agencies would allow whirlpool to acquire maytag....has whirlpool given any indication of what they plan on doing with maytag once they acquire it??

Dependable Care washer

From what I understand the Dependable Care washer will not pass the new efficiency standards that come into effect Jan 1 2006. It would have to be reinvented and I am not sure anyone in the industry wants to do that. If the merger goes through look for a Dependable Care washer that looks alot like a Whirlpool.

As a tech of over 38 years on the road Maytag got what they deserved. The junk they produced is the laughing stock of the appliance repair industry.
