White Knight Dryer

Came across this White Knight tumble dryer in Hughes Electrical and wondered if anyone else had or has had this MODEL? It's C rated and costs 40p per cycle to run. I've never had a tumble dryer before but was considering one just for bedding and towels. I have no problem getting washing dry when central heating is on or log burner just the times when it's not cold enough to have heat on. Any suggestions?

Hope you're OK.

I've had a couple of those in my lifetime. In fact I think our first dryer when I was about 8 years old was one of them (badged as `Philips'). Currently have a full sized version of it. Has been a basic, reliable workhorse.

Always found the compacts a decent little dryer really, built by CrossLee in Halifax I gather. I prefer them to the alternatives due to rear venting and the viewing porthole. Before now when space is limited I've just stuck them on a counter and used...probably breaking all kinds of common sense rules by doing so. I would say spending the extra few quid for the reversing model is worth it.

The only think I would say to you is exercise caution if you're buying it for bedding. Especially if your bedding is large and or all cotton - it will crease to b**gery. You can get around it by keep stopping and shaking out / using a ton of fabric sofetener etc.......but a bit of a PITA.

Also you'll need to split the average sized wash load in two and dry in two batches, but I guess you know that. This obviously is more expensive, time consuming and therefore worse for the environment so if you CAN fit one somewhere I think full size is preferable. If you can't, as I say I think this is a sound choice.

I must admit I tend to throw our bedding over the bannisters to dry. An old habit picked up from my nan which I probably should get out of!

In Brazil that dryer was sold as Continental and the full size version was sold under Continental and Bosch brands.

Both of them were excellent dryers and i loved the reversion (full size)

It was cute to have a dryer that small.

Nowadays my only tumble dryer is a Magic Chef i got brand new a few days ago and I can say I'm super happy with it, but it's bigger and dries much less than this little gem. Also, the magic chef has a lint filter that is a PITA to clean, while the dryer you showed has a convenient filter under the door opening.

I don't know if in europe they do the same but in Brazil it used to come with a wall mounting bracket.

I'd die for one of those dryers again.

Its good to know others reviews before one buys on themself because i sometimes wonder if Which reviews are in favour of certain companies.

I generally never use fabric conditioner but i could buy the 'Sensitive' or 'Clear Skies' from Sainsbury's.

Thanks for your good wishes. The holidays seem a long time ago now, but we had a good time thanks. Back to January / work now with a bang. All good!

Was that old Hotpoint I had a liberator? I thought they were just the purple ones. I stand corrected. Anyway, actually I owned it very briefly. I was busy having kids at the time so moved it on to someone who would really appreciate it.

If you need fabric softener and you're still in Chelmsford I have about a million bottles (it's like an illness) please just come and take some off my hands!!

Best luck with the dryer. Of course you don't need to use FS if you don't want, I just hate creasing / ironing / static so find it a necessary evil. And I remember even more so with a compact dryer. Those things get HOT!!

Drying Laundry in Winter - The Eco Friendly way

I rarely use our tumble dryer, I have a full size one and only use it if I have lots of big stuff to dry like towels and bedding.

But most of the time, I hang washing outside even in cold breezy weather, gives the clothes a good airing a bit of line dried freshness. I bought a dehumidifier last year for £129 which i run overnight with the clothes on the clothes horse and shut the door in the spare room, and the clothes are all dry and ready to be put away in the morning. This sucks all the moisture out the clothes, and dries them, at the fraction of a cost of a tumble dryer.

I rarely put clothes on the radiators unless they are slightly damp, as wet clothes brings damp and condensation into the flat. And its important that your home is ventilated to stop mould building up, which is bad for your health.

Hi Ben,

I had one of these when I first left home in a rented flat. Alongside the 5kg washer we had at the time, it was fine for drying bedding and towels so they weren't hanging all over the flat, which kept the clothes horse free for jeans, t-shirts and the like.

I still think that a bog standard, reversing, vented timer dryer is far better than any condenser, sensor, heat pump nonsense. We've got a full sized Miele condenser as there's no where to vent a dryer in our house, but given the chance, I would love to have a basic dryer like a full sized White Knight.

My hubby keeps saying he wanted to build a tandoori oven in the back garden - I've told him he can do that if I can dig downwards and put a bloody dryer vent in LOL!

Can you please discover a way to contact the White Knight company?
If there's anybody in UK that could call them and ask them to reply the emails The Laundry Alternative sent them we will be highly appreciated.

To say thank you, the US member that emails me the information (except the email address and phone number that appears on their website) will get a free dryer when we negotiate with them to make our own version for the American market.

For those that still don't know this dryer, it is much smaller than the Haier/Magic Chef and it dries much more and much faster, even on 110v.
