Anyone know of anyone who collects, restores, or repairs various sirens such as outdoor sirens? One of the particular siren sites is airraidsirens.com There are both mechnical & electronic outdoor sirens. Tle loudest sirens are particularly the Chrysler & Bell Victory as well as the Federal Thunderbolt sirens. The Thunderbolt sirens are have a rotating square horn & are blower forced for more loudness.

Talk about a LOUD hobby

Search Youtube. There's a few people that does own these things. There's also a group of enthusiasts for vintage garbage trucks (classicrefusetrucks.com). I can dig that too because I used to love to watch the garbage truck when I was a kid (still do).

Besides the Applianceville and Vacuumland sites-I check the Classic Refuse Trucks for their latest compactor videos-very interesting-for some appliance sensitive members-they do show appliances being crunched.

Hi Jason

Its quite funny how you mentioned watching the garbage truck. Andrew my partner is the same. He owned many "Bucket Lorries" (as they are called here in Scotland) as a child and he even now owns a big bucket lorry toy which he purchased last year! He gets it out now and again and plays with it. If he is home when the bucket lorry comes round he is straight up at the window to watch.

I must admit I do find them interesting to watch.

I sort of vaguely remember a siren discussion on Applianceville once before. Some of those had massive blowers on them to provide the air for the siren!sort of reminded me of pipe organ blowers! Also the blowers could be powered by an engine of some sort if the electricity wasn't available.

I have an old Federal signals siren. It probably dates back to the early fifties or so, and runs off of 12 volts at 25 amperes (lots of power for that time!) It has that classic fifties fire engine sound to it! It's somewhere in my garage, if I find it, I'll take pictures of it. My neighbor who was restoring a 30's vintage fire truck gave it to me. He installed a 30's vintage siren to match the era of the truck and gave me the newer one that didn't quite match the truck.

Here's a site that shows all sorts of emergency vehicle sirens. the one I have is the Federal Signal model 78. The one my neighbor installed on his truck is like the Elektror FLS1a. Lots of neat stuff on this page. I remember hanging out at the rescue squad my parents were at and seeing all these emergency signals on the ambulances up there back in the 70's

Federal Signal

I don't restore or collect sirens.
However, in electronics lab many years ago I was repairing a Federal Signal electronic siren for the local Fire dept.
After replacing a cap, I flipped the switch. The wail that thing let out scared the crap out of everyone on the floor.
Federal Signal is based in Illinois I believe. I pass their buildings fairly frequently.
