i used to LOVE one big happy, i dont remember ANY vacuum strips. i do remember Ruthie NOT wanting her aunt(?) to pinch/kiss her cheeks, and smearing chocolate frosting allover her face to prevent it. im very curious what inspired the cartoonist.

An even better question...

is what inspires Bill Griffith, creator of Zippy, to go on and on about front loading washers. He was raised in Levittown where they had a standard, round tub, bolt-down Bendix that came with the house. He gets to voice his obsession through Zippy, but it's pretty major.

notice the boys *hairdo*, notice his *animated* movements. is the cartoonist trying to tell us something about him?

All I can say is wow, it reminds me of me, somewhat.

I am also really curious about what inspired him.

me too

Especially in the first one, "I'll be the judge of that" from the age of about 9 on I was fixing/tweaking/troubleshooting vacuums for neighbors, relatives, and friends of my parents.

The vacuums were sweet back then, lots of metal base Convertibles, Dial-a-Matics, cool canisters...
those were the days!

Wow, that hits kinda close to home. Of course it wasn't vacuums (at least not at that age), but bicycles. I remember everyone seemed to have some old bicycle in their garage that I would go look at. Even if it wasn't that old, I'd still tell them more imformation about it than they ever wanted to know.

BUT

Besides the very few friends I had, I kept it quiet about that when I was in school. I knew that would've given kids another reason to pick on me.
