Mind you I wish I could find some memories of Phase 2 Torrent detergent, but I guess that one is just going to have to be a distant memory of mine.
Anionic surfactants are generally high foaming and otherwise pretty much behave like natural soaps in water. Like soaps anionic surfactants are bothered by hard water. The high foaming quality is often why such surfactants are/were found in shampoos for hair and body/skin washes.
Non-ionic surfactants OTHO aren't bothered by hard water conditions, are low foaming. IIRC Dash, "Condensed" All, and other low foaming laundry detergents are based upon non-ionic surfactants. However it is common for detergents often to contain a blend of anionic and non-ionic surfactants.
