Tried them, hate them. Around here growing up we had 2 kinds of donuts, the light, vaguely KK like, glazed donut, but much better IMO, and the heavy fried cake. Love dunking these in hot coffee. Plain or powdered, or an occasional nutty, still a favorite.

I DO!!!One night several years ago a freind and I worked all night on a TV stations transmitter.Rebuilt the visual stage tube sockets-replaced some other parts and vacuumed out the rig with my NSS M1 vacuum.after that both of us had worked up an appetite.this was in Richmond VA,did the work for ch#8 out there. We went to the Krispy Kreme dounut bakery there- and ordered two one dozen boxes of the cinnamin suger coated dounuts. Then the Nice warm boxes got stacked on my lap-big mistake for my freind-the aroma of those warm freshly cooked dounuts was more than I could resist.I Devoured both boxes and we had to go back to the bakery to get two boxes for him.I paid for them. Then after that we ate breakfast at Dennys-that French Toast was sure good-the dounuts were an appetizer.Never ate so much in my life.that morning was a record for me.Wouldn't want to know what my blood suger-glucose reading would be-Bet my doctor would have killed me!Those dounuts were sure so GOOD!Didn't know until that day an all nighter fixing a transitter made me so hungry! On occasion where I work now someone brings in some Krispy Kreme dounuts-various types-If you put them near me they will get devoured!Sometimes someone will order them during day shift-then they don't last until mid shift!A rule at the workplace here-if its out on the kitchen counter-its fair game!!!Some goodies out there now-but not KK dounuts.

I enjoy a good doughnut like a lot of people....

But are Krispy Kremes the best? For me, no.

Yes I have had them and initially I thought they were quite good, but the more I tried them, the less I liked them.

The facts as I see them (IMHO) and the reason I will never buy them again...
1. Krispy Kremes are the MOST expensive doughnuts I have seen.
2. Krispy Kremes are a much smaller in size then other doughnuts.
3. They are also SO much sweeter then any other doughnut I have ever had.
4. Once they cool to room tempature they really are nothing special at all, no better then any other doughnut out there, even Winchells.

I prefer the locally owned "Mom & Pop" doughnut shop because many times they are so much better then any of these "doughnut chains" and a much better price (again, IMHO).

Not here

I think they all closed here. What they did is open up a bunch of stores, great response from the public. Then they proceded to sell the same donuts in all of the grocery stores and convenience stores. All of a sudden it was not exclusive. Plus that took away form the store's sales.

Martin:

The same thing happened here in Houston. The few stores that they had sold also to various grocery stores and gas stations. But by the time they got there, they were cold. Krispy Kreme's are always best served hot.
On occasion we would stop by and pick up a dozen glazed ones. The way to counter the excessive sugar was to eat them with black unsweetened coffee. Take a bite, drink a sip of coffee. You'd have enough sugar in your mouth to sweeten the coffee.
I found them to be very light. Personally, I liked the texture of them.
Sunday mornings at Krispy Kreme was one of their best days. You'd have a ton of people buying several dozen at a time. Mostly people buying them for Sunday school at the local churches!
But in the end, I think they could be classified as a fad in most parts of the country. People always pushed the "doughnut of the stars" aspect of them.

And after the lawsuit between KK and the Houston franchisee, the old KK stores became a Jumbles Doughnuts. These did not fly at all with the Houston public and they too are now gone. At this time KK does not plan to re enter the Houston market.

Apparently KK is rather pushy when it comes to franchises expanding.

They're not doughnuts.

Krispy-Cremes aren't doughnuts... They're CANDY. The chain is dying a slow death in Chicagoland.
Yes, I like them and I can eat barely one - then I'm done for about a year. Shame. I would like for the chain to survive and I'd spend my money there if I could but there's nothing for me to buy.
In Chicagoland we also have Dunkin'Donuts. Not great doughnuts but tolerable. I patronize my independent doughnut maker whenever possible as those are so much better. I liked CEE-BEEs but they're nowhere around anymore.

Too sweet for me, I'll take a Dunkin Donut over a Krispy Kreme any day. And I'll take a Biagio's donut over a Dunkin any day. If you are ever in Eastlake, Ohio do check out Biagio's Donut and Pizza. Best donuts on the east side of Cleveland. And then there are paczki (pronounced punch-key). Polish jelly donuts made for Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday for our southern friends. They are the richest filled donut you will ever taste. Traditionally made as the kitchen was purged of sweets and cooking fats before Lent began. Remember, this coming Tuesday is Paczki Day.
