I talk about Sunbeam and the famous Bowl-Fit beaters which gives them an edge in whipping and creaming.  I used one cup butter and 2 cups granulated sugar in a creaming comparison of the model 9 with a sloping sided bowl and smaller beaters and the model 10, the first year Bowl-Fit beaters were offered with a straighter sided bowl.

In the bowls and ready to rip.

The One Minute Mark

This test offers not one tendon of human intervention.  These machines are on their own to get creamed.

2 1/2 Minutes In

The model 10 is edging to kill time while the model 9 isn't even warming up yet.

9 is Just Not Enough

The close up of the model 9 shows how far the edge of the bowl is from the equal size beaters leaving over half of the mixture untouched.

10 is Just Right

The Bowl-Fit beaters are nearly twice the size of the model 9.  The Bowl-Fit beaters are not matched with a conical shaped beater mixing right up to the edge of the bowl and the middle or square bottom beater cleaning the bottom of the bowl.  Because the beater span reaches almost to the middle of the bowl not a grain of sugar can escape.  Again all these pictures have absolutely no human assist in bowl turning or scraping.

Kelly, I've learned from your tips of creaming, give it lots of time.  The last time I made my favorite cooked frosting I took the advice you posted a while back and let the mixture cream for 10 minutes and the end result was fantastic, much better than the very good results I had in the past.

Seized

Nothing worse than a cramp just when you're getting close.  Spindles can seize if not oiled properly especially when stored for any period in an unheated or damp areas.  Dribble oiled around the top of the juicer port opening and in the key slot under the handle.

I wouldn't be Bothered

I wouldn't cook if I had to use a hand mixer.  The luxury of a quiet mixer that minds it's own business while I tend to other things at hand is a real kitchen helper.  Many of the modern cooking shows demo a cake or frosting and have everything dumped in the bowl in 45 seconds and then show you a lovely bowl of creamy batter or smooth frosting.  I think it throws a novice off course.  Its amazing how faithful the Europeans are with whipping, creaming or kneading and often without a mixer for 20 and 30 minutes at a time.  Matt did you get beaters for your model 9 yet?

Kelly-
No, kind of put it on the back burner as other things have taken precedence.

Just curious, what else do you have in your mixer collection other than Sunbeams and KA's? Did you have the GE's that I recall seeing posted here a while ago? I've got a Ronson tucked away in the closet in the basement and an old Kenmore Hand mixer from the early 70's, that had a nice wall mount case with the cord and beaters stored behind a door. The Sunbeams my mom had when I was growing up are long gone, so I was glad to get the early model..

Collection

I have one of everything, Kitchenaids x 5 including a model G, Westinghouse PowerMaster, GE Triple Whip, Dormeyer 3000 & 4000, Krups, 21 Sunbeams including an Australian model 24 and  6 hand mixers, my favorite the Sunbeam 12 Speed that was also sold as a hand mixer. Come on out and we'll whip up a heck of a good time.

In the end, after 60 years and remembering about 57 of them I always, always come back to the Sunbeam.  I love the quiet of the model 10, the deco lines of the 11, the slightly beefier 12, the esthetic of the MM series is far and away my favorite, so sleek and easy to clean.  Many of the Sunbeams that are 70 years old are still just putzing along without ever having maintenance or repair.
