Hello All,

I'm currently on a quest for Wink soda, ya know the grapefruit soda from Canada Dry.

It hasnt been available in Pittsburgh for several years now and I'dlove to have some.

To my understanding Wink is still available in the Carolinas, that being said I was wanting to see if anyone in that area has access to it in their local stores. If so I'd greatly appreciate it if you could hook me up with a few bottles by either shipping them or if you'll be at the Pittsburgh Wash-In I could pick up there.

Thanks

Sam

Try these folks.

They're in Cincinnati and seem to have nearly every obscure thing.

Squirt is readily available at just about any store around here.  I think Squirt is now part of the Coca-Cola family.  Once in a while you'll find it included in the selections at a self-serve soft drink fountain, usually at independent eating establishments.

Wink I haven't seen or heard about in years.  There is a place in the Eagle Rock district of Los Angeles on York Blvd. that carries nothing but "lost" brand soda but I have forgotten the name of it.

Here in MI Squirt is part of the 7-UP group that includes RC Cola, A&W root Beer, Sunkist Orange Soda, Mt Dew and a few others.  We often get sales on the 6 pack plastic 16 oz bottles -- buy 3 get 4 free for about $10.  I've stopped drinking most pop and only drink it occasionally after years of drinking a couple of bottles a day.  Don't even miss it.

Many if not most regions, what gets bottled and retailed is at the discretion of local bottlers licensing it.

I remember Wink. I remember Squirt being better. However, no soda today is what it was 'back then'. Except Mexican Coke which is exactly the same. Even "legacy DrPepper" made with sugar is not what DrPepper was in 1956. DUBLIN DrPepper was, but the corporation shut them down the first of this year.

If the Wink or Squirt you can find is made with HFCS, don't bother. It won't taste anything like what you remember. I don't know why but HFCS destroys the flavor of soda. I even asked Coke why that was. They wrote back a form email, "Thanks for your interest in CocaCola products."

Squirt

In STL, Squirt is a part of the Dr Pepper/7 UP distributors. I love it for is refreshing taste, great for after yard work or mixing with an adult beverage. I agree about Mexican coke, but it's so dern expensive here. I have to save it for a once-in-a-while treat.

Mexican Coke is over $1 a bottle here too. I can't budget such luxury.

Pepsi Throwback however, is made with sugar, close enough to what 'legacy' sodas tasted and priced the same as current products. I drink 4-5 a week. Even though I never liked Pepsi, but sugar Pepsi is MUCH better than HFCS Coke which tastes like brake fluid/paint remover/bug spray.

The Squirt brand is ownwd by Dr. Pepper/7-UP of Plano, TX.  Here in Wausau, Squirt is distributed by Mid-WI Beverage Co., a local independent Pepsi distributor.  Dr. Pepper is handled by the Coca-Cola distributor.  It varies widely from region to region who handles what products.  Todays beverage industry is very complex and it's more than just selling soda nowadays.  Mid-WI Beverage now also distributes coffee and coffee-based drinks, flavored waters, energy drinks, juices, and so much more.  It is a very cut-throat business with alot of your big box stores dictating product type, size, and at what prices they are going to sell.  Some stores even tell the distributors what prices they're going to pay and/or how much of a discount they want.

When I worked @ MWB from 1991-93 we bottled Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, caffeine-free regular & diet Pepsi, reg. & diet Mtn Dew, reg. & diet Squirt, reg. & diet A&W root beer, reg. & diet 7-UP.  We did 10 and 16oz returnable glass bottles, 20oz plastic, 2 liters, and tanks for bars and restaurants.  They stopped bottling in 1993 because it was no longer cost effective, and the returnable bottle market share had dwindled to almost nothing.

Nothing beats a soda bottled with fresh 35-38 degree well water on a hot & humid summer day.

Maybe it goes w/o saying, but when I left a link for where they sell "it," the "it" I was referring to was your Wink. Didn't catch that I left my participle dangling!

Good luck! Next you'll be looking for Vernor's!

Chuck

I haven't seen Wink in years either around here and I don't drink a lot of pop. I always have some Vernors on hand though, it's my favorite ginger ale because it's the gingeriest as well some Faygo red pop which they don't sell in Canada any longer so I have to get it across the river. BTW I noticed on the Vernors labels they call it "ginger soda" now not ginger ale.. that's a sin LOL . The old Vernors bottling plant used to be right downtown in Detroit but it's long gone now

I Remember it well!

My Mother drank it all the time, if it is still available in NC it is in another area besides here, I havent seen it in years, I will be on the lookout though!! I wish I could find some Cel-Ray, "celery soda" I love it and you cant get it here either!

Does anyone else remember Tom Tucker Mint Ginger Ale? We had it in Pittsburgh... but I may be dating myself... Is it still available?

Here's a link to the lawsuit filed by Dr. Pepper / Snapple. It's kind of an interesting take on corporate greed. So they intend on making it in Temple, Tx with cane sugar. Just how long do you think THAT will last?

I hate it when trade associations buy TV ads to baldface lie. If HFCS was the same thing as sucrose, US Coke wouldn't smell and taste like drain cleaner compared to Mexican Coke which smells like dessert.

They obviously know they have a problem, that more people hate them than don't, or they wouldn't be buying ads and lobbying to change the FDA designation.
