Winter Storm #3: Enough, Already!!

Who watches network news anymore anyway? Ken Cook trumps Burns anyday, and they both pale to Cantori et al...

Still, not a flake in the air and several counties are closing schools at noon. I love the South!

Iowa Weather Report:

We were forecast to have six or eight inches total for today and tomorrow. We've got almost that much already!

Blowing like crazy, and colder'n a witch's grits.

Schools are closed, which isn't normal here.

Kinda fun, actually. I've already shovelled twice, just to keep up.

Peter:

I agree about Cook; he has always been able to deliver the weather without so much drah-mah. He's also a personally nice guy. Paul Ossman at WXIA is okay too. I go back far enough to remember when that station was WLWA, then WAII.

Eugene i have never seen snow like that , that is WILD !

80 degrees here and trade winds are returning---

The skies have been crystal clear here. The waves maxed at around 25 ft.and the humidity is at 24%.The average temperature is 80F.This same forcast is going to last through the weekend.I am planning on going to Kona(the hot side of the "Big Island")and visiting a few beaches including Spencer where the water is always still and I can fall asleep floating on my back. The only issue is sharks that have a habbit of swimming in shallow areas like Spencer.Just have to watch out for their fins showing up.Lifeguards there are "festive".

Furnace short cycling

Once when we had a big snow with sustained winds out of the East, it clogged my neighbor's furnace intake and exhaust pipes. They called John cause the house was getting cold and it was about 10 at night. He fixed the snow blockage.

Rod Stewart sang it back in 1971...

...on the tune "Mandolin Wind":

"...through the coldest winter in almost fourteen years..."

We haven't seen this *consistently* cold of a winter in about that long.

They're forecasting 20's to high 'teens "in town" for the next five nights, which means we'll surely see at least five degrees below that, as we're situated in a low-lying valley on a creek.

I'm lovin' it...after the "Summer From Hell" it's definitely a treat, even with all the faucet-dripping and pipe-wrapping and blanket-over-window-tacking we've had to do!

29°F outside.

37°F in my garage.

59°F (master bath) to 65°F (LR-kitchen) in my house, depending on which room. I've not been running the heat very high. The coop "fudge-factor" was high for Dec, and will be high again for Jan due to the primary generating station going off-line for a couple days with a problem of some ilk just at the wrong time, requiring the coop group to buy some power from elsewhere at open-market rates.

We just had a small three inch snow in Lexington. We have only had about six inches this entire season. Not very bad but it has been windy and cold and blowing it around. As I type this it's 6 degrees and -7 wind chill. But after looking at those MN pics above, this is NOTHING!!!! LOL

Maybe this sustained cold will help rid Florida of some of the exotic reptiles that are threatening to take over down there like the iguanas and those giant pythons, sort of like reverse pyrolitic cleaning; cryogenic cleaning, maybe

Warmth producing colder temps

The Arctic Oscillation is in a negative reading at this time meaning that the waters of the Arctic Ocean are much warmer than normal causing a blocking of the Polar Jet sending it South instead of East. There is an interesting article explaining this and giving evidence of past cold winters with the same cause at AccuWeather.com

A related article announces that the CIA is once again sharing weather-related data from their satellites with climate scientists who have security clearances in the United States. The practice was halted by the previous administration.

*WOW* BRRRR that's cold.

Can heating systems deal with such unusual cold snaps?
Is there enough gas/oil/elecltricity to go around, or is high demand causing shortages?

Single digit temperatures oudoors in my area for some homownders may mean one won't be able to get 70*F (22*c) inside.

Cold!!!

Here in the UK we had the coldest winter night recorded for a while, some parts hit -18c, icicles indeed, the snow has hardened & compacted so ungritted roads are like ice rinks!!! here is a pic out of the office window as the flurrys started, thats the phone line that connects us all!!! the link is to the local weather news!!!
