I have a job interview tomorrow for a laundry aid position at a nursing home. It's only part-time, but it's better than nothing and it would be doing something that I enjoy--LAUNDRY!!!!!!

I did laundry aid many years back....not the most romantic job, but it's usually steady and fairly secure; most people don't want to be w/o clean clothes.

You'll enjoy being warm, not a lot of time pressures, fabulous enthic exposure, great potlucks and most laundries have a standard washer tucked away for special or hurry up wash. If you really want it, it's yours already. You have the Rubber Slippers, my dear.

I really want this and who knows part time could turn into full time.

My resume is basically office/computer oriented, which I really have no interest in anymore. Working with washers and dryers is what I really want to do.

Jim, you and I are in the same boat. I'm a degreed accountant, but after being laid off in April I think its time to move on to something else. I've also thought about getting into a trade such as appliance repair. Best wishes to you in this job prospect!

I have thought about appliance repair, but with my poor vision, I don't think I could do it. Working on my own machines is different I can take all the time I need.

There are many things in life on which one can skimp to save money, toilet paper IS NOT ONE OF THEM!!! I grew up with the cheap stuff and once I tried Cottonelle, I never went back!

I did that...

I spent a couple of years in the laundry of a nursing home as a favor to a friend. He couldn't find anyone reliable, and I LOVE laundry, so it was a match. I enjoyed the quiet hum of the machines and the feeling of satisfaction in those racks full of clean towels & sheets! Good luck, you're on your way!

P.S. Beware residents who ask you to press things! Once the word gets out the little ole ladies LOVE you.

Good Interview

I think the interview went very well today. They are going to check my references, previous employers, and do a background check to make sure that I have never been arrested for elderly abuse/neglect. I saw the dryers but I didn't get to see the washers. The dryers are old Cissells; she said the washers were old too I'm guessing Big Boys from the sounds I heard. She has requested new ones, but it's a money issue.

Four little old ladies sitting in on the patio wanted me to talk to the on the in. I explained I had an interview, but I would talk to them on my way out, but they were inside it 11 am probably getting ready for lunch. If hired I will be cross trained in housekeeping and dietary.

I'm so excited, I hope I get the job! They have a union, and I'm not sure as whether I should join or not. What a your views on unions?

Depends on your state..

Whether you have the choice of joining the union. It looks like Iowa IS a right-to-work state and thus you may have the choice.

When I worked in the medical records department of a local hospital a union was voted in. I automatically became a member because Pennsylvania is NOT right-to-work and we do not have a choice in the matter.

This place was a never a good workplace from the beginning and when the union came in, nothing changed. My dues were costing me about 450 a year and all I got for it was a Teamsters magazine (You could get A LOT of Consumer Reports for that money!). Eventually I left that job because some workplaces are just not very friendly. So, if you don't have to I would not spend the money on dues and if something bad happens, well the economy will improve and there are always other jobs.
