Is a keeper!

Picked up a box yesterday and did a small load (grimy duvet cover and a canvas laundry bag),. and both came out quite clean/bright. Since my Miele has a soild door can only tell by "sound" if there was "too much" sudsing, but actually found myself adding a tad bit more detergent as the laundry sounded like there was no sudsing at all. Know this because suds tend to make laundry sound muffled, whereas when the water is clear all one hears is the happy slapping/sloshing sounds of laundry being moved in water/against the tub.

At only 1-2 tablespoons this small box should last ages, and really do not need any more detergents in my stash, but may go back and nab the remaining several boxes as the product is NLA.

Yes, one can open the door, but on my model (W770) the emergency door opening feature can only be used under the following circumstances:

No water in drum, or at least water must be pumped out well below the door opening.

Machine is not spinning/drum as come to a stop.

Water temp is not over a certian degree.

To open the door in case of a power cut or other emergency one must first drain the water out of the tub using the little hose located behind the kick plate. Once water is out, then the emergency release can be used.

If one suspects excess sudsing I wait until after the main wash water has been drained, then have a peep by just turning the machine "off" and using the main door open feature. In fact one does not really need to turn off the machine, as long as the water is below a certian level, as stated above, just open the door as usual.

This Miele has it's own way of letting one know if it is over loaded/sudsing or not happy. If too much air gets into the pump it makes a noise that can best be described like a goose being strangled to death. If that sound goes on for too long, know something is not going right and may shut things down, drain and have a peep.

Go for those boxes of Wisk Ultra Powder, Launderess! I've been hoarding boxes of my beloved powdered Tide CW because it has virtually disappeared from store shelves around here. If you like the product, you can't have enough of it on hand. If UniRobert and others get good results using decades-old boxes of detergent, I'm sure the Wisk will be fine as long as it doesn't get wet.

Any detergent that does a good job of cleaning and doesn't oversuds a FL machine is worth its weight in gold.

Launderess, are you sure about that? I have a somewhat newer Miele and can always open the door with the latch at the bottom of the machine. It's totally mechanic, unlike the normal door opener, so the machine can be emptied in case of a a power failure. Ofcourse you don't want to open the machine when it's using the higher water level, but you can hear it when it uses that (for example at the end of the main wash). Most of the time the lower water level will be just under the door seal.

My washer (W770) is an older model, and uses quite a bit of water in both normal cottons and PP cycles. This machine is so "old" that it still has the "1/2 load" button for use when laundering small amounts in the cottons or PP cycle.

Am quite certian the door will not open unless the aforementioned conditions are met.In fact IIRC it is in the manual. Not sure what would happen if there was a power cut and tried to open a full machine via the "emergency latch". Quite frankly not keen to find out either. Your not getting me to unload 11lbs of wet laundry and who knows how many gallons of water (possibly very hot), flooding my laundry area/kitchen. *LOL* I'll stick to my other methods of checking for over sudsing

You can open the door of the W1986 after the start of the cycle unless the water level is up on the glass or the temperature is raised. The W1918 is an older design and does not allow for opening the door except during the first few minutes after the start of the cycle. Neither of them can be opened between the final rinse and the final spin unless you turn the dial to off and allow the cycle to advance to off.

Where did you manage to find that powder Wisk? That is a treasure. I so remember that period of the ULTRA formulations when I could use all of those previously high sudsing products in my combo. Do your boxes of the Wisk have the little red plastic scoop?
