Betty Feezor...

In the days before cable TV,Food Network, even Julia Child,North Carolina had Betty Feezor, starting on WBTV Charlotte in 1953 she had a home making show 5 days a week...for over 23 years, and let me tell you..no matter where I was , if she came on you were QUIET, Everybody and I mean everybody who was home was glued to the tv from 1 to 1.30 pm Mon thru Friday, She was NOT a fancy chef like you get now , but a home economics teacher, her show had ,in addition to cooking, all aspects of home making, crafts, sewing, house cleaning tips etc,her 3 cookbooks consistently bring a high price on e-bay,her show was always rated higher than ANY show that was on at the same time...sadly, she found out in early 1977 she had cancer and had to give up her show, she passed away in early 1978, but a book about her life was written by her while sick, it was a column that she decided to place in the Charlotte Observer newspaper,to help others dealing with sickness, it ran the year she was sick, after her death it was put into book form in a book titled A Life That Mattered, she was a true Christian lady that even in sickness was interested in helping others,I remember watching her funeral which was broadcast live on WBTV and seeing my Grandmother cry thru the whole thing...that is what she meant to everyone who saw her, one of her last shows is on you tube, her son Bob has it posted, sadly there are only 2 of over 6000 shows in exisistence, look it up, it is totally different than the food network stuff.

cooking bags?

the scanned crock pot brochure mentions the use of cooking bags...are these still available? haven't used them in years...
my Grandmom made a mean Strawberry Tapioca pudding. Only my Dad and I really liked it (more for us in a house full of 7! lol)

Hans,

I saved this recipe and will make it soon. From all of the writings here, it sounds delicious and I can't wait to make it. Thanks for sharing this.

Delicious!

I did this in the crock pot. Threw it all in following the recipe and set it on low 10 hours. This is excellent and so easy. The only thing I would do next time it to add some garlic and some hot pepper flakes. I like spicy foods. The stew beef just melts in your mouth!

I make my beef stews in a pressure cooker now because it's mucho faster and tastes just as good imho. About 20-25 minutes once pressure is reached. I don't add the thickener until it is done and the lid removed.. Normally I'd use corn starch but even better is potato starch if you can find it. Regardless either of those are better than flour which can cause lumps if you're not careful.

Thanks guys! I have a 5qt West Bend Country Kettle that I think would work perfectly, just not sure how long to let cook though. Do you stir this at all or just leave it as is?

P.S. A Country Kettle is basically the same principle as an electric skillet, just in kettle form instead.

I had that model Crock Pot!!

The one in retropia's link/photo. I bought it in 1980 for $8.88 at Ann & Hope in Seekonk, MA while in graduate school. They also were selling Procter-Silex toasters for $8.88 and I bought one of those as well. It was worth the drive to score deals like that.

The crock was not removable in this model, which was a pain when you washed it, since you had to be careful not to get the base (electrical parts) wet. I gave it away after I bought a larger model with removable crock. At the time, however, this size crockpot was considered a standard size model.

LOUIS...tapioca

Tapioca may be known as Cassva in the Netherlands, something sticks in the back of my mind saying that.

You may be able to use corn or potato starch.

I watched the videos on youtube, I just love her accent, to bad their aren't more videos of her shows.

Quite tasty it was...

I too left out the potatoes, and used the oven, as opposed to the crock pot, method...
Served the stew on a bed of mashed potatoes...
Prep time was about 15 minutes...
I like those kind of recipes...

Made the stew in the pressure cooker.
I overcooked it! Was I supposed to let the pressure drop of its own accord?

Will try it with less salt next time, and I may add wine and cinnamon for a more ethnic flavor.

I loved making this. Thanks Hans and all!

I've got mine in the oven right now. It's been in almost an hour and OMG it's smelling SOOOO good already. The only thing I changed was, I added some minced garlic. I love garlic so it was a must have. I had to use my big roasting pan since I don't have a casserole dish or dutch oven big enough for everything to fit. Looks like there's going to be plenty of it and I can't wait to try it. My Mom is falling in love with the aroma.
