Honestly, my favorite part of repairing these machines is removing the dirt, rust and grime and getting down to the pristine porcelain that was made to last for more years than these machines were designed to work. Maytags and machines like them deserve their reputations.

Too bad about the fill flume - but it looks a little brittle if it broke so cleanly like that so it must have been time for a new one anyway! Check around on ebay, you can sometimes find Maytag parts at very good prices. Washer parts are like shoes and handbags; you can never have too many ;-)

No, not yet. Aside from yanking, any suggestions?
Don and I cut his off with a dremel/rotary tool. The agitator shaft was fine under it. Of course, you'll lose this agitator unless you can find a spline kit and installer to replace it. Do you have another black agitator for this machine?

Ken ... I sure do love the simplicity of design with a Maytag; it is very apparent with the cabinet removed, isn't it?
My parents purchased a new A502S in 1964; it ran and ran and ran. My Mom finally sold it with her matching dryer after my father passed away and she moved to an apartment. If I had known then what I know now, I would have hung on to them!!
I accidentally cut a corner of my fill flume off (the original; still in excellent condition ... drats) when putting it back on to my A700S. Luckily, the local Maytag dealer still had a couple in stock. They sold it to me at their 1990's price - $16.50; maybe your local dealer will have one, too.
You can still order the agitator and filter dispenser; you'll get a black polypropylene agitator and a turquoise filter, but it works. I use the poly agitator a lot; especially when bleaching. Do you have the original filter for that machine? Was it the solid cap one or was it one with a black fabric softener dispenser?
