Well we have a 2008 Holden Viva Wagon Automatic which is also known as

Suzuki Forenza
Chev Lacetti
Chev Nubira.....and others depending on which market you are in.

I don't accept that the cars deserve to be considered a poor vehicle.

We have done 25000klm so far and have only had 2 minor issues, one of which was the dealers fault when fitting our tow bar...

They were...

- The centre console coming loose (wiring for the towbar) and
- a small squeak from the dash...

Both sorted.

The car doesn't have a great deal of power when running standard unleaded, but fill with premium and it is much better seemingly finding reserves that are non-existant when on standard fuel.

As for the build quality, it's fine. Paint is smooth and, resolved points mentioned above, perfectly decent.

Now, the drive. Well it starts first turn of the key, stops quickly and without pulling left or right (and has ABS should it need it) and when I had to swerve to miss a Mercedes at 110klm that decided it wanted my lane, handled that without incident.

If I am picky, I would want the 2.2ltr motor that Holden put in the Vectra rather than the 1.8ltr one we have and slightly more powerfull airconditioning.....

Other than that, as far as we are concerned, I can quite happily recommend the car to those wanting something perfectly serviceable and that won't break the bank...especially as a 2nd hand buy.
 
The Buick version of the Aztek was the Rendezvous. Nobody mentioned possibly the worst POS to have ever been on the road, the Yugo. What a piece of crap!!!
 
I had a forenza as a rental car while on a busniess trip..
It had 6K miles and rattled like a 10 year old blazer-Gripe 1
It didnt have cruise-Gripe 2
The seats where hard and uncomfertable Gripe 3
My 2005 Chevrolet Malibu with a 2.2 4 ets 25-27 mpgs.. In Vgeas traffic.. It got 21 mpgs in Branson Mo and 28 driving to New Orleans and Back Gripe 4
It had zero power, a ford taurus has more power gripe 5
The stereo sucked gripe 6
When i got to new orleans it whent back to avis and i got a Yaris...

OMG THE TOYOTA YARIS

I knew that the newer Dodge Sebring and the Stratus had transmission issues, But I didn't know that they suffered from blown engines as well. I guess that the 1998 Dodge Breeze would fit into that category as well. I always liked the outer design of that car. When you say blown engine, exactly what goes bad on the engines?

It all depends on the motor...

The 2.7 V6 is a mitsubishi designed engine and generally the engine sludges over from the ports and will overheat and blow the head gasket..Its the main cluprit..
The other two know engines (the 2.0 4 cyl common in the breeze and the 2.4 4cyl) are not near as bad, but still not good..The both tend to blow head gaskets and consume oil...

I also know my minister at my home church had a 1999 Intrepid for his wife and a 1996 Eagle Vision for him self.. the intrepid had a 2.7 V6 the vision the older 3.3 V6... The vision is still alive at 183K with just minor issues.. The intrepid was replaced in 01 with another intrepid under the lemon law.. That Intrepid was replaced in 07 with a Hyundai Azera... It was his 7th chrysler and his last..

I refuse to ever drive a chrysler corp car.. They make a few things i'd love to own.. But this is just a part of why..

I had a 1996 Chrysler Cirrus with the 2.4 4cyl... At 62K miles the power steering pump hose started leaking..After dodge fixed it twice, it leaked for the third time, dripping on the exhaust manifold and catching it on fire (this was in 2002)..it totaled the car and the chevy corsica next to it.. chrysler did nothing to help me.. i wound up having to get my parents to buy a ford taurus for me..

Yeah, Chrysler really had an opportunity to make a great mid-size car with the Sebring/Stratus/Whatever. They did stick the bigger V6 in it (a 2.7, I think), which was a big improvement over the 2.4 liter four. But then they ruined the styling and from what I gather from the reviews, the handling, fit, finish, ride, and just about everything else sucked.

But it wasn't Daimler that ruined Chrysler. Well, they did some bad things, and some good things. But when they sold it off to Cerberus, headed by GE AND Home Depot reject Bob Nardelli, and counseled by the fabulously idiotic Dan Quayle, the company really took a nose dive. And I'm a diehard Mopar man, I just shudder at what crap the company turned out in the mid-to-late 2000's.

As for the Neon, yeah, I have a '97 coupe. I actually love the way it rides and handles. The seats are comfortable, and the engine peppy enough, even with a 3 speed auto. But yeah, it has had more than its share of problems. The tranny decided it wouldn't shift into reverse until the engine was thoroughly warm, and then not from 2nd into 3rd until warmed up also. The rear of the head gasket started leaking oil, which left a puddle big enough to get it banned from the company parking lot. The ABS brakes have never really worked right. And the paint is peeling in spots... luckily it's white and easy to touch up. The car has been parked at the local community college auto shop lab for the past 9 months. The first team to work on the tranny failed... Now I'm taking the manual transmission class with a new instructor who promises to fix it... we'll see... I might wind up with it as a project when I take the automatic transmission class in the spring of 2010... And I also have a '78 Dodge full size pickup with a leaky and slightly balky automatic, which I could also use as a guinea pig.

My '99 300M, however, is running quite perfectly. No problems other than minor recalls for this or that. And I can coax 25 mpg in mixed commuting, although it usually drops below 18 when I'm doing a lot of in-town stop and go. The 3.5 liter V6 has more than enough power, and the car is quite comfortable with a relatively good ride (I put on stiffer tires so it's not as quiet or smooth as it would be with more sedate rubber).

I have to agree 100% with the review of the Sunfire. It is truly a POS (sorry if anyone here owns one). I had one as a rental once, and I couldn't believe how bad it was. Its only positive aspect was that it LOOKS sporty from the outside. But all pretensions of sporty performance, or even adequate performance, are stripped away as soon as one is encased in its BOL torture chamber and tries to coax some rpm's out of the sad thing they call a motor.

Back in the mists of time there were Dodge/Plymouth twins called Omni/Horizon. They had transmission, exhaust, electrical, body integrity/hardware issues. My $ were very tight then. I had the Horizon, i still don't know how Mr. Ralph Nader missed that death trap. alr2903
 
I had a blaze orange 1979 Plymouth Horizon. Everything that could go wrong with that car did, broken timing belt, brake line, head gasket, etc.
 
Smart Cars

Can someone tell me what the point of these things are?

Yes, they get good gas mileage.

BUT:

1. They aren't that cheap.
2. They use premium fuel.

My commute car is a Toyota Yaris - NOT a hybrid, as I feel that the hybrid cars are suffering terribly from over hype - but it gets 40 (well okay anywhere from 38-42 miles per gallon depending on how I drive). It seats FOUR comfortably. It was cheap! (WITH TAX and all it was about 13,000).

I investigated them when I went shopping for a car to drive my commute in -- when gas was $4 the cost of the car loan+insurance+gas == the gas costs for my (paid off) truck. I still have the truck but drive the small car to work.

And with the Yaris I can go to the grocery store and buy more than 1 bag of food.

Well the American market got a larger engine than anywhere else in the world to help overcome the very low octane rating of your fuel....

We have 3 grades of fuel here. Standard (91), Premium (95)and basically a 'super premium' (98).

I have to say though, that with standard unleaded (91RON) it is a slug...running super premium (98RON) it has more ooomph and gets better MPG..

Add to that the mere fact that it is better for the engine and, to be frank, I don't care about the cost.

Now on the topic of oil sludging, this seems to be a peculiarly American issue....and is something that I have not heard of here
 
Actually Chris, our octane rating is no lower than yours in Australia, it's that our advertised number is (R+M)/2 at the pumps whereas Europe and Australia display the unaveraged RON figure. More likely the Forenza got the larger engine here to compete with other models in its class. -Cory
 
Well something is amiss then...

....I've just read an American road test of an Auto wagon (2.0litre) which puts the 0-60mph time at 11.9seconds....

...and an Australian road test of an Auto Wagon (1.8litre) with a 0-100kph (62mph) at 11.3seconds....

The other thing to note with cars we receive here, is that the vast majority of manufacturers provide Australia with 'European' suspension settings or, if it can be justified, locally tailored settings. As a result, our cars handle differently to otherwise identical vehicles that are sold in the US

I know as fact that Holden made sure that the 1.8litre engine was programmed for low end torque to provide reasonable 'off the mark' pace......and the 1.8litre does give another push when over 3900rpm...
 
Smart

Hunter,

Have you ever been to Paris or Rome? Then you would know what sense there is in buying a Smart. It's parking space! The Yaris in the picture needs a regular parking space while the Smart can be parked transverse.

I have a Smart and when I bought it friends said that I didn't buy a car but a statement. I guess that is true. They aren't as comfortable as most other cars, still I can transport lots of stuff with it, I even took home a few garden chairs from the garden center. Will my next car be a Smart again? Probably not, but sometimes I have doubts, it really is a fun car.

BTW, a Smart is one of the safer smaller cars.

Buy a used, 3-4 year old slightly larger 4 cylinder car...

The Yaris has some of the worst ratings on the planet, unless your a toyota/honda biased trade publication.. They are nice, but the un conventional dash lay out is not my favorite.. And gas mileage as well..Its not that far off from my malibu

Per the epa's website... A 2005 4 cyl malibu averages 27.7 mpg's or 28 mpg's.. A yaris gets 34.4 or about 34 (round up if abouve .5 round down if below .5)

Thats 6 miles per gallon or 78 miles per 13 gallons of gas.. Or about 2.6 gallons of fuel.. Yeah thats an extra $6.50 per tank... But...
If you bought the car used (as i would) for $7,500 with 60K miles that would offset the slight increase in fuel usage.. Not to mention the fatc a yaris generally costs more to maintain per year, insure per year and GENERALLY is owned by either a younger driver or "less experianced" driver or elderly people... Not to mention the saftey factor...

I am of the mindset a car shouldnt cost more than $10,000.00
I love cars dont get me wrong, but i can fathom spending 30 big ones on a car.. Why do that when a 2-3 year old version of the same car is about HALF the cost..

BTW If you live in NYC, Chicago, ATL, LA< Miami, Boston, San fran to name a few.. A smart car would rock.. Next trip to san fran im going with a friend and we are renting a smart 4-2.. not that i like it to drive, but it will fit where i need it too.. Something my malibu cant do..

I know im probably going to be shot in the foot for this

But...

When i bought my malibu, i looked at a 2003 and 2002 Honda Accord LX and EX 4 cyl.. While i liked the 02 OK..I did some reserch and discoverd how problematic these cars can be...And how damn expensive a HONDA is to maintain.. And insure..

And i'm sorry but the 03 had the most awful, uncomfy seats of anything ive every driven... EVER! ICKKK

Not only that, but there always in the hands of young kids who "tune" them and make a general mess out of them.. WHY?

Its not a vin diesel movie.. We are not fast and furious suburban brat child part 2...

UGHHHHHHHHHHHH... And all the blonde bimbos i see driving them too.. And just the whole "honda" menatlity (or it seems to me)

I know honda has a few good cars.. but there like wal mart to me.. an un necessary evil..

And the Toyota Camry... Toyota finally made it look half way decent again.. But thats where it stopped.. There have been alot of quality control issues and problems with them... Not to mention how many people are walking away from toyota due to sludged over engines.. And the camry is just not what it once was, which is a sad shame really.. I had an 88 camry wagon as a beater car and it was great... But i wouldnt have a new camry.. No way.. I drove an 04 LE 4 and it was sooooo damn huge... Almost bigger than a crown vic to me.. There is a reason toyota is falling and hasnt made a profit this year... Look to Hyundai... There keeping prices semi resonable on there sonatas and santa fes and elantras... And selling them like mad

Im sure some one here has a Element... But there is nothing worse than a rectangle on wheels.. There underpowerd and tipsy.. And the sunroof is in a dumb place.. And i have seen 3 or 4 flipped over in routine side impact crashes... Not to mention they have an issue with the side air bags deploying for no reason... Again an issue honda refuses to fix...

Any worst cars list would be incomplete without mentioning Yugo. In 1986, I was buying my first car on my own and test drove one. Pieces fell off during the test drive. I ended up buying a Subaru GL Hatchback that was the best car I ever owned and is still the standard by which I have judged all my cars.

The worse car I have owned was a 1995 Kia Sephia. I had it six months and it was brought back to the dealer 18 times. They swapped it for a Mazda 626.

I now drive an '06 Cadillac STS. I have had it 10 months and with my commute put 22K miles on it. So Far, No problems.
