just picked up a 1972 WP top freezer manual defrost-in"period correct"avocado :).Anyway, this fridge says"automatic"on the door badge-looking over the wiring diagram, there are several small heaters in this fridge including one on the fridge compartment evap plate and the drip trough under-pipe from the trough drains to porcelain evaporation pan under the fridge-wiring for the heaters leads to the cold control, does this fridge feature"semi automatic"defrost of the refrigerator evaporator? Fridge runs great, almost noiseless and I might swap this one into DD use in place of my '80 GE as the GE is bigger than I need-this WP shorter and shallower by several inches than the GE.

1972 WP Automatic Refrigerator

Automatic refers to the fact that the refrigerator section defrosts automatically every time the compressor shuts off. The low wattage heater behind the evaporator plate in the Fresh Food section keeps the freon lines from developing an ice block by warming this spot of the evaporator. This heater is wired across the thromostat so the heater is only on when the compressor is off.

These were very good refrigerators and it should still have the Whirlpool Rotary compressor, these were the best compressors ever used in a home refrigerator.

thanks for that info combo52-looks like I got a good deal for $30 :) I suspected the compressor was a rotary as that is what I have found in WP ACs of the same era,i have to listen very close to hear the compressor run.
