I have a Whirlpool Gold Direct Drive washer w/ 3-speed motor. (Model #: GSW9800PW2) When I run a wash load on the Fast/Fast speed, I start smelling a burning smell that smells somewhat like burning oil. If I run the cycle on Low/High, I don't smell anything. The machine is NEVER overloaded, always plenty of water. About a year ago I had to crack open the gearcase and replace the neutral drain assembly. At that time I cleaned out the gearcase with a paint brush and paint thinner to get out all oil residue, and refilled with fresh oil. Based on the Youtube vids that I watched prior to replacing the neutral drain, the gearcase needs 85w-90 gear oil; however, I picked up 85w-140, and had already refilled the gearcase, and sealed it up with RTV before I noticed that I got the wrong weight oil.

At that time, I posted on here about my dumb mistake, and all replies said not to worry about it as long as the washer isn't in a garage in cold weather which, of course would make the oil become much thicker. The machine is indoors with adequate ventilation.

At the time I replaced the neutral drain assembly, since I had the machine torn down that far, I also replaced the pump (OEM), Heavy Duty coupler, clutch assembly, skate plate pads (crescent shaped ones only), and agitator dogs (complete assembly).

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this burning smell, considering the machine has been maintained well, other than the screw up with the 85w-140 gear oil? Should I go to the trouble of opening the gearcase again and replace the oil with 90w?
