Hi all. Mt friend Linda told me that her 2009 Duet needed its lint filter needed cleaned by a repair guy for a touch-up. Is this true? I never knew it had one and I have 8 cats since I bought my Duet in 2005. Thanks, Bill.

Say it ain't so!

But it is!!!

There is a lint trap on these machines, but you have to remove the bottom panel and it is located on the right side right there in front. To clean it, you have to turn the plug on it counterclockwise and then pull it out and clean out the debris and who knows what else!. Just have a basin to catch the few quarts of water that may come out as you loosen the plug.
A word of WARNING!!! it is very hard to turn, there is water in there like I said and it may smell really bad too. Pull the little filter basket off the plug handle and clean up that area as most of the really smelly stuff gets stuck in there too!
Have fun!

Note that this filter of question is a filter/strainer to protect from debris getting into the pump.

It's NOT a "traditional" type of recirculating filter to catch lint out of the wash / rinse water while the machine is tumbling/washing/rinsing the clothes -- it has absolutely no function in that regard.

I've periodically checked mine and there's hardly anything in it and I have two cats. I don't think hair gets stuck in this type of filter it's more for items left in pockets, which I'm personally pretty good about checking. Now that I said that, I'll end up washing a screw driver or something.

You may be surprised what's in there. Our duet had nails, stones, coins, a couple of combs and other odds and ends clogging it up once. Can't find any holes big enough, so the larger items had to have gotten there by some form of witchcraft.

It's insane Whirlpool doesn't have this trap that's easily accessible. The only way I know it even existed was online forums like this one.

Pump Protector, Not A Lint Filter

I know that others also pointed this out, other note,, this pump protector should not be slimy or stinky inside, if it is you are not doing your laundry properly and you are not getting clean clothing from this washer.

I have seen many pump protectors like the one DADoES posted, and these are always the users that say they have to use unscented detergent because they have allergies to perfume when it is really MOLD, FILTH and BACTERIA that they are allergic to, LOL.

"It's insane Whirlpool doesn't have this trap that's easily accessible."

Form over function, I guess. The European ones have an access door, as you can see from my profile pic.

Question:

Could it be that the reason washer manufacturers do not include common-sense type features like an access panel to the pump screen on their machines for the US market is because they are afraid of possible litigation? I mean, the US is the most litigious society in the world as far as I know. I also read on here about Miele's 1 year guarantee for the US market as opposed to it's traditional 10-year guarantee elsewhere. Perhaps this is for the same reason?

Electrolux did not equip it's Frigidaire machines with a pump screen access panel. The entire front panel of the washer, including the boot, must be removed in order to access the screen.
The Electrolux machines sold elsewhere have this feature, to my knowledge. This is a very sad state of affairs....

I am the only one

in 9 years since I've had my Duet, that has used it. I won't let anyone else do laundry. I've always checked pockets religiously and in the 9 years I have checked the pump like 3 times, I stopped checking it because every time I did, there was nothing at all in there other than a we bit of lint; not enough to even worry with.

That pic that DADoES posted is just pure funk all out nasty. If cleaning that mess out doesn't fill the void, NOTHING WILL!

I have a Kenmore He4t. When the service guy came last summer to do the annual inspection (I had an extended warranty), he gave me a warning that there would be an awful odour when he cleaned out the pump. He was absolutely amazed there there was nothing in it and it was as clean as a whistle.
