Hello, all! The rental property I'm living on at college has a BOL, early '70s Whirlpool electric range. It has a double-dial oven control, with one dial for temperature and another for function. The functions are Bake, Broil (Low, Medium, High), PH (Preheat) Only, and "S." Is there anyone out there familiar with WP stoves of this era and can tell me what S does?

Robert, That was a good one.

I remember seeing this setting on some ranges but can only guess what it might mean. Possibly "Simmer" would be my guess.

None of those...

This is an absolute bottom-of-the-line range, no clock, no timer, not even a storage drawer.

And funny story, I almost got electrocuted by the blasted thing on Saturday evening! Turns out the burner socket needed to be replaced. It took the in-house maintenance man to point this out. The electrician who'd been called in just kept saying, "Yeah, ya need a new stove. Time to get a new stove." No coincidence, the electrician's company is an appliance dealership (Frigilux, Gibsolux, White-Westilux)! So I still have the Whirlpool in my kitchen, but I'm afraid of turning on S to find out what it is!

I had a similar range in my 1973 condo, so I dug out the owners manual, and the "s" is the fourth broil setting - high, medium, low, and "slow", for broiling fish, etc
